Reply from Genes.

Dear Ann,

Thank you for taking the time to report this problem.

I have passed the details of this specific issue to our technical team to look at and investigate.

Your patience while we work to resolve this is much appreciated.

With kind regards,

Dean

I'm always on desk top, with Firefox .......... don't have any other gadget!

I got one error trying to get on just now, but then got in, and it seems to be working more or less as normal.

AnninGlos Report 30 Sep 2017 15:14

Took me 15 minutes to get in this adfternoon, first time of trying today as we were out until then. It first opened to the error page, then subsequently wouldn't open at all. Shirley I was having to do that all day yesterday. I have not reported it but will if it is still bad on Monday.

I am on desk top (But have had the same problems on Ipad. I have windows 7 and firefox and Wifi.

It was particularly bad first thing this morning but , fingers crossed, seems to have speeded up now.
Like Shirley, I'm currently on an iPad which runs faster than our ancient PC.

It has just timed out on me 3 times trying to open the site.

I had to google Genes Reunited, then click on Sign in here ............. got in that way

Guess I really did "speak too soon" last week!

Allan Report 30 Sep 2017 00:33

I can get on the site OK, but four out of six postings timed out and then everything was back to normal...or as normal as can be for this site!

SylviaInCanada Report 29 Sep 2017 22:22

Drat this site!!!!

I wasn't having any problems ......

....... but the last couple of days it has timed out when trying to get on to the site.

Once on, no problems

Kense

Kense Report 22 Sep 2017 21:59

Tried it a few times, it was usually 30ms, occasionally 29ms and once 31ms.

Open a command window c:\>
and enter this:
ping 213.128.240.53
you should get a reply within 32ms
if there is a long delay or even a timeout then your ISP has peering issues with Cogent Communications. There is nothing GR can do about it.

I have always had the Standard membership, pay about £9, use Mozilla Firefox, and have high speed WiFi

............ and as I said earlier, my server is not one that would be used by anyone outside certain areas in Canada.

I have not had any problems on GR

Kense

Kense Report 22 Sep 2017 16:18

I have the Standard membership for which I pay about £9 pa. I mainly use a PC with Windows 10 and Edge, It is connected by cable to the router (i.e. not WiFi)..

I haven't had any recent problems and don't notice any slowness apart from the 10 second delay on seeing emoticons and poster information when a new page is displayed.

JoyLouise Report 22 Sep 2017 16:16

I pay the minimum too.

I have use three - one of which, Google on iPad, I tend to use most of the time. Not Google on PC or lappy though.

Don't like the sound of this .... call me Thomas! :-|

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 22 Sep 2017 15:04

I have the next one above minimum.

I also use Google Chrome, which seems to be Genes favourite server. Do you use something else and could that have anything to do with your problems?

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 22 Sep 2017 13:12

JoyL I have minimum.

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 22 Sep 2017 12:46

It has been a pain for a couple of weeks now, taking ages to access stuff.

During the last week I've not posted as often as I did previously but the site is still a pain.

Gremlins, d'ya think?

Just sprung to mind - is GR discriminating against those who pay the least per annum?

Those who have already joined the thread may like to say whether they have full membership or minimum, thereby proving or disproving my 'theory'.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 22 Sep 2017 01:26

at least GR doesn't freeze my computer as one site that I have been looking at has done every night this week

It's a legit site, British Expats, but I have to keep turning off the power because everything freezes up.

I find the site interesting, but I think I am going to have to deny myself the pleasure!

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 22 Sep 2017 00:34

I am not experiencing any error messages but, for the last 2 or 3 weeks i find that the GR home page is really slow to open.

I have tried using Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox but, it makes no difference.

The GR home page still takes about 30-40 seconds to fully open

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Sep 2017 17:46

Ken .................

I'm not sure you are correct with your estimate of when I am on here vs busy times. This is my first visit of the day .............. it's 9:40 am here, I guess that means about 5:40 pm in the UK

I normally do other things for at least 90 minutes, so would be back between 7 to 8 pm UK time, then on and off for 3 or 4 hours

what is/are the peak times??

I would have thought after 7 pm was one of them, certainly that's when I seem to get immediate responses to anything I post.

The overseas guys tend to be on here later .............. midnight or after UK time.

Have to admit though that GR is by no means as busy as it once was. Sometimes there are no new posts on any board for hours after about midnight UK time. I usually spend my time doing other things then, where I would once have been helping on Genealogy Chat or Find Ancestors.

I usual enter directly (via my bookmarks) to the General Chat board. More often than not lately though it times out so I have to click on the Genes heading on the error announcement and go to Home page and then to the General chat board. Not a real problem, just aggravating and I wondered why it was suddenly doing it, knowing that the techies were fiddling last week trying unsuccessfully to find why the 'watched threads' were not generating e mail alerts.

I am also getting errors when adding to threads but no problem with that as I know that is a 'porky' and it will have added. :-D :-S
