He was always known (affectionately) in our house as 'The Ozzie Nutter' as I'm petrified of snakes and couldn't understand why anyone would actually want to dig them out, chase them or get close to them! Had great admiration for him and his work - a sad loss.

He was an absolute Icon, wasnt he. They even had him on The Simpsons. What a shame, only 44 wasnt he? But I guess he did take mad risks with his life and he lived it to the full - how many can say that. RIP

CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44. Irwin was killed by a stingray barb to the heart on Batt Reef, off the remote resort town of Port Douglas in northeastern Queensland state, his wildlife park Australia Zoo said in a statement. Crew members aboard Irwin’s boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead a short time later, the statement said. I was so shocked to read this my 8yr old thinks he is brill

I was about to put a post up for him too, so very sad am absolutely gutted. The man has done something that very few presenters have done over the years encouraged kids to actually learn about wildlife...not just watch but learn. My daughter over the years has watched all the usual kids programmes and yet she still would rather watch Steve and wife Terri! I do truly hope that Terri continues the Croc Hunter/croc diary programmes because she is as remarkable as Steve...and it would be a perfect tribute to him. A great bloke...he'll be sadly missed I reckon....Croc Rules!!!!

I was so shocked when I heard about this and so sad. He was an amazing Man and had such a fantastic way of getting his message across - particularly to kids. I've always admired him and the work he's done and he has left a huge gap. My thoughts will be with his family now. Kaye x

A Rare Talent! We in England will miss Steve also, he brought a special form of entertainment to our TV screens. I guess the only comfort is that he would have been pleased to end his too short adventure of life in such a dramatic and unusual way. He always lived his life 'on the edge' and was never happier than when he was taking risks. You can imagine what he would have said! Crikey! God Bless his family. Baz
