and for that reason, I ask that only people who DO want Moderators on the site, to add their names. The list will be sent to Genes for perusal and contemplation. Elaine ;-)

I do agree with you David. I prefer the idea of making GR an all paying site. So if someone posts on any board, they have to be a paid up member. That way GR can keep track of them by their membership registration. Maybe there should be a time out before you can post, say 1 month, so that people can't just jump on and off ad infinitum making stupid comments or advertising for free?? Nanna-M :) (just mho)

I never thought that a Moderator would be a member ! They would have to be paid by GR and be impartial. We pay approx £10 (some less) to be members on here. What do WE get for our membership fee. It's us members that run the site ...our participation on the boards is what makes the site ... Records /Tips / General ... adding our FT's makes then available to others. The only thing that we get, is a website that we can all use. Other people make websites for others to use, and I imagine very few of them have these many problems, most of them are monitored. Monitoring is NOT the only answer ...I appreciate that. Everyone should pay to post. ISP's should be logged for all members .... to prevent people coming back time and time again with new numbers, just to cause problems. Obviously, there WILL be times when folks have problems logging on etc and problems with there membership ... but surely, our membership fee should cover our piece of mind ?? It's NOT impossible to sort out .... if enough people stand up and be counted, we may be heard by GR ... and even if they can't solve the problems over night, any sort of input from GR would be advantagious surely ? Elaine ;-)

I think that the knowledge that moderators were about might make people less likely to be antagonistic for sure. I did actually ask a question about this fairly recently and was told by some long standing members that GR staff did regularly 'patrol' the boards. My suggestionat the time was that these members of staff should be somehow identified - It would be a little like seeing a traffic warden when one is contemplating parking in a naughty place - the site of him would definitely be a deterrent !

The reason that many 'smaller' websites are able to moderate is precisely that - they are small so there are fewer potential postings to monitor. The problem with moderating is that a site can lose a lot of its spontaneity whilst postings are checked - consider how many and how frequent postings are on here at busy times. There is also surely a cost factor - a small army of impartial moderators would need to be employed 24 hours a day and that cost would inevitably need to be passed on to fee paying members or covered through increased advertising revenues - something I am sure would prove unpopular amongst many! So, what does out current membership fee cover? Well general site maintenance doesn't come cheap and there are staff costs. Then there are the hosting charges and GR probably pays a premium for its monthly bandwidth too. And what is the answer? Logging ISPs certainly isn't because that information is largely meaningless. Surely it would be better to log IP addresses so that if a member is suspended or banned they would not be able to rejoin from that individual computer again.
