Someone posted a thread earlier saying she was related to her husband. Can't find her in the 1901 census. Is that her real name? Lynne

I knew I could rely on you all to come up with the answer - you may all be mad on here but you are TRUE Detectives LOL!! I think it was William Gardner's wife. Has anyone looked for this family in 1901?? Lynne

Very interesting, I will definitely watch this series. I think the BBC theory [William Gardners wife] is a very plausible one, but we'll never know for sure. Vivienne

Deborah Well done that girl!! I think you are right as there are 6 children and she lost another one later that year. Yet another mistranscription - LOL!! Lynne

You lot are as sad as me - not, 'oh poor girl, how dreadful to be murdered', but I wonder if I can find her death index and see if she's on the census?'!

Lynne

Lynne Report 17 Sep 2005 22:31

Nell How right you are!! As soon as I saw her name, I came straight upstairs (miising some of the programme) to see if I could find her on the 1901 census. As you can see, I was unsucessful (Sorry its a bit late for spelling!) I knew I could rely on the GR detectives to find her - LOL! Brilliant people!! Lynne

Oops, sorry Lynne, have just come on line and posted a reply to my original thread, and then spotted yours. I hadn't been able to find Rose on 1901, but now, with the name of the family she worked for, I have been able to find her. Dee xx

It has also crossed my mind that William's descendants may be on these boards. Must be quite difficult for the families of those who have been convicted of crimes to see their relatives portrayed on TV Dee xx

People do the strangest things.I have found out things about my family that makes me sad ,angry and disappointed, but they probably had reasons for what they did and I do not judge them as I was not there and did not have to live as they did,I just try to except and understand that things then were so different and I am who I am because of my ancestors. One thing I found strange was that on the web I had found the following 'Early one morning one hundred years ago, an elderly man went to see his daughter in a small Suffolk village. He entered the kitchen where she worked. To his horror his daughter lay dead on the floor. Her throat was slashed. She lay in her nightdress which was almost completely burnt. During a torrential thunderstorm the previous night, Rose – just 23 years old – had suffered a most brutal death. ' Yet on the TV tonight it was the mistress of the house who found the body Dee xx

Dee I had seen your thread earlier and must admit I was quite surprised when the circumstances were quite different to what you had posted. Do you think they changed a few things for the programme for some reason or maybe the information you had was wrong?? From what you said, she was an ancestor of your husband. Do you have any other details of the trial, inquest or anything? Lynne

Hi Lynne I must admit it is my brother in law who has researched that side of the family and as I rarely see him I have very little information. He did however confirm that she was part of the extended family. I did a search on the net when I saw the programme advertised and came up with the info I posted There is a bit about it in a book I have on Suffolk, but it is just about the second trial Dee xx

Mind you the candle did drop to the ground when Rose was attacked, and I was waiting for it to start a fire, which it didn't. Dee xx
