In that case, other than searching all members trees for contacts, make sure that GR always has your up-to-date email address.

That way, if another descendent/relative stumbles on this thread in the future, they can contact you by clicking on your name. Even lapsed members can receive and reply to personal messages ;-)

Thanks. There are newspaper reports, TV programs, books, and I do have access to subscription sites.
Really, I was just registering my interest in Rose, in case anyone comes looking, and has anything further to share.

From what I have read in this thread, the original posters did not have Rose in their tree, they just had an interest after watching the program.

Thanks for your input. :)

There could be a report in the British Newspaper Archives?

If you don't have access on this site or Findmypast, it is possible to search for free.

Copy and paste the free preview and someone with the relevant sub can look at the original.

This thread is now 10 years old ................ I doubt whether most of the posters are still active.

May I suggest that you Search All Member trees to see if anyone has Rose, and then send a pm to them.

Rose was my great great Aunt, on my dad's side. I have a fair bit of her tree, but would love more details if anyone has any.

I want to know how true the statement made by Fellowes at the start of the programme was 'It was a strong Methodist neighbourhood, with an Amish-like atmosphere'. My ancestors came from there at about the same time (and earlier), yet my g grandmother suddenly appears in the 1891 census in Bournemouth and my gg grandparents have a grandchild living with them!! G grandmother then moves to Southampton with a bloke she meets in Bournemouth and proceeds to have 9 children out of wedlock (by the same man)................. Maybe we weren't of the strong Methodist type :0 l maggie

Dee Well it is fascinating stuff. I wish I had something that interesting in my family. The best I have is a mysterious death and a few children born out of wedlock- LOL! Lynne

Mind you the candle did drop to the ground when Rose was attacked, and I was waiting for it to start a fire, which it didn't. Dee xx

Hi Lynne I must admit it is my brother in law who has researched that side of the family and as I rarely see him I have very little information. He did however confirm that she was part of the extended family. I did a search on the net when I saw the programme advertised and came up with the info I posted There is a bit about it in a book I have on Suffolk, but it is just about the second trial Dee xx

Dee I had seen your thread earlier and must admit I was quite surprised when the circumstances were quite different to what you had posted. Do you think they changed a few things for the programme for some reason or maybe the information you had was wrong?? From what you said, she was an ancestor of your husband. Do you have any other details of the trial, inquest or anything? Lynne

One thing I found strange was that on the web I had found the following 'Early one morning one hundred years ago, an elderly man went to see his daughter in a small Suffolk village. He entered the kitchen where she worked. To his horror his daughter lay dead on the floor. Her throat was slashed. She lay in her nightdress which was almost completely burnt. During a torrential thunderstorm the previous night, Rose – just 23 years old – had suffered a most brutal death. ' Yet on the TV tonight it was the mistress of the house who found the body Dee xx

People do the strangest things.I have found out things about my family that makes me sad ,angry and disappointed, but they probably had reasons for what they did and I do not judge them as I was not there and did not have to live as they did,I just try to except and understand that things then were so different and I am who I am because of my ancestors. It has also crossed my mind that William's descendants may be on these boards. Must be quite difficult for the families of those who have been convicted of crimes to see their relatives portrayed on TV Dee xx

Oops, sorry Lynne, have just come on line and posted a reply to my original thread, and then spotted yours. I hadn't been able to find Rose on 1901, but now, with the name of the family she worked for, I have been able to find her. Dee xx

Lynne

Lynne Report 17 Sep 2005 22:31

Nell How right you are!! As soon as I saw her name, I came straight upstairs (miising some of the programme) to see if I could find her on the 1901 census. As you can see, I was unsucessful (Sorry its a bit late for spelling!) I knew I could rely on the GR detectives to find her - LOL! Brilliant people!! Lynne

You lot are as sad as me - not, 'oh poor girl, how dreadful to be murdered', but I wonder if I can find her death index and see if she's on the census?'!
