I am like you, Joan, like things spelt correctly, also cringe at some of the grammar, but I have never commented as I realise that we are not all the same. Takes all sorts, as they say.
I must admit that my fingers sometimes get dyslexic when typing too fast, perhaps one hand is faster than the other. I correct it if I notice it before hitting the submit button. I also find that sometimes the computer does not type a letter which I am sure I have hit and capitals do not always come up as capitals. Perhaps I release the shift button too quickly. But I am certainly not going to criticise anybody over spelling or grammar.

Having said all that, I am never sure whether it should be spelt or spelled but spelt takes less time to type!

And as Hayley says, we all have our own talents.
I love numbers too, Hayley. I enjoy doing sudoku and adduko and kakuro puzzles but a lot of people think they are hard because of the numbers.

This is from my thread I put up yesterday about this urban dictionary. Some entries are interesting, worth a look.

New words and sentences to put them into context.

'Christmas Adam '

The day before Christmas Eve. Since Adam was created before Eve, and the need to be equitable in the holiday season, Christmas Adam creates further anticipation of Christmas Day.

When is your family coming to our place?
On Christmas Adam and leaving New Year's Day.

Christmas Adam is the last chance to prepare for the Christmas Eve party.

-----------------------------------------------------------

'Voluntold'

Voluntold: The exact opposite of volunteering. Always used in reference to an unpleasant task to which you have been assigned by your boss.

Example 1:

Co-worker 1: I hear you got a transfer.
Co-worker 2: Yeah. I didn't want to, but I was voluntold.

Example 2:

Co-worker 1: You want to go fishing Saturday???
Co-worker 2: I can't, I got voluntold I have to work this weekend.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Compunicate'

When you are in the same room with someone, each on seperate computers, and you talk via Instant Messenger instead of speaking to them out loud, in person

Even though they are sitting right next to each other, Jesse and Justin only compunicate when they have to tell each other something.

So is that why when typing, you get letters mixed up sometimes?

maryjane-sue

maryjane-sue Report 27 Dec 2007 22:57

This is likely to cause offence - but I often wonder if those who use text speak instead of English are just too slapdash to bother to try and write/spell correctly. And if that is the case - what are their trees like? Probably full of weird abbreviations for dates, names and places - and then wonder why they dont make contacts/matches with people searching their tree names.

Personally I would rather spell incorrectly than use text speak - at least I would be making the effort.

I wonder how long it will be before there are chat rooms and message boards just for this new "language" - as there are for the other languages around the world. I wouldnt go onto a French site because I wouldnt be able to understand it - and I dont understand this new "language" either.

And yes, Joyfull is correct re that thread - this is why proof reading is so difficult, we just dont see the errors when we read over something. But the text language doesnt work on the same principle, which is why it is harder to understand.

Don't want anyone getting upset or hurt by any posts on here including mine so if anyone is upset I will delete the thread.
Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, I am usually fairly good at maths, but can't get the hang of Sudoku and probably spelled it incorrectly too lol
My son is fairly good at spelling, he will check if he isn't sure, but is a real whizz with the sudoku.

I would love to be proficient at Sudoko, I end up having all 9 numbers in every square and getting right muddled... forget the letter one! LOL

*Helen S

*Helen S Report 27 Dec 2007 23:16

I can't even grasp the basics of sudoko, my 9 year old son is good at it and I haven't the heart to tell him he could put whatever numbers in and I'd be none the wiser.
I'm good at crosswords and quizes though, words being more my thing

Silly Sausage

Silly Sausage Report 27 Dec 2007 23:37

I can't even spell in txt either........No Hula I cant do sudoko....to much thinking....I have a very small attention span....the natural thing is your brain soaks up the information that is fed to it...some, like me don't. I reject what doesnt interest me and soak in to the last ounce what does. Like historydates etc....I tell you about my christmas in 1970 aged just 2 and a half but what I did last week not a chance even if I met you if you have no interest to me I shall forget you...

When I was being assesed for dylexia. I had to read a 2 page document..most boring thing I have evver read and I had to read it out loud. I kept having to be stopped as I was making up as I went a long with knowing it. After a few mins I was asked questions about the piece I had just read and the only questions that I got right was the ones which invovled numbers.

Huia

Huia Report 28 Dec 2007 01:24

Aha, Liz. Are you American? Or was your teacher American?
I have just looked up the dictionary re spelt/spelled.
Usage: Both spelled and spelt are used as past tenses and participles, the former (spelled) being standard in American English, the latter (spelt) being the usual form in British English.
So I will carry on with my British 'spelt' even though spelt is also a hardy wheat, Triticum spelta, from which many cultivated wheats are derived. (To quote my dictionary).
Huia, happy she is not misspelling it after all!
