Hi all. Yes rootschat is full of information and very helpful people on there like here who know the area well. At this time of events there is indeed no facts, we have nothing absolutely concrete except for the fact that Evelyn did indeed have a mother who sadly passed when Evelyn was around 20yrs old. Diane did not leave or give Evelyn much to go on as to who her parents were. Robert MacLeod is named as Diane's father but we don't know if Diane ever met him or stayed with him, we do not know when he passed away, he could have been at home or at war. Diane never mentioned her mother, did her mother pass when she was a young girl and this is why she was sent to live with aunt kate in stornoway? Did Diane actually remember her mother? There are all these possibilities. I actually feel for Diane something did not go right in her childhood, she told wee lies for whatever reasons. We cannot rule out Diane as being an adopted child! We may never find these answers! But we can keep digging for clues!

I watched a repeat programme of Coast the other night and there was a man McLeod who run a small boat between the islands for over 50yrs I bet he has some good knowledge of families in the area's of Stornoway, I'll put a post on Roots to see if anyone knows him! Anything is worth a try.

Its not a problem Evelyn I enjoy it. We will find out what Diane's(mum's) birth name was eventually, she can't hide for ever!!!

It makes you wonder if someone out there searching their own family tree has come across a female born 1906 who they cannot follow through because of Diane's possible name change, or on the otherhand someone will have Diane's mother in their tree but not found out or followed any children!

I can't wait till the 1911 census comes out, your mother will be on it somewhere I would imagine, I can see us all frantically searching females born 1906 named Leslie, MacLeod, McLeod or any other suggestions we will have by then!

I often lie awake thinking of Evelyns mother,and fall asleep hoping I will dream of Evelyns mother to tell me what we want to know.
Who was she ,where was she really born,why couldnt she have spoken more about her childhood.
I truly wish I could have found her,but I am sure one of you others will,and when you do,PLEASE let me know.

At a tangent, I wonder why Leslie is spelt in the male form rather than Lesley which is the female?

How is Ishbel whilst Evelyn's away? Is she missing her walkies!!

Ishbel is fine but def needs a long walk with auntie.
I often think Ishbel is like a child with that thing that is to do with hyperactivity,she does not STOP.
My youngest boy was / is the same so I should be used to it,but it can be rather wearing.

Hurry up back auntie Evelyn,Ishbel needs you to take her on a VERY long walk.

Leslie the male way was prob her real name or her fathers real name or her mothers maiden name,it would not have figuered? otherwise I think,

Hi Evelyn hope you are well and enjoying France. I don't know if you found the same but what is it with some of those MacLeod people??? Lol, I have contacted a few people who were born around middle 1920's who live in Inverness and have good knowledge of the area, I know that some are in their mid 80's but my goodness they are so protective of their MacLeod's, its a case of "not in my back yard" or "No not my MacLeod's" best one yet, "are you sure it is MacLeod" Really it is so funny some of the replys I have had back, I just gave them an outline and Diane's name to see if it rings any bells and how you are searching for details of your family. Oh well the mystery continues!!!

Evelyn, just a thought. Would it help to change the title of this thread to say 'Looking for Diane Leslie MacLeod' rather than just 'Mother'? Wish I knew more about Scottish history so I could help more.

It will soon be possible to take out a subscription to FMP 1911 census. They are talking about October. That may give us more clues.

I have been reading all the threads with interest and feel for you that you haven't managed to find your Mothers family.

I have had help to trace my 2xGr.Grandmother Jane McFadyen who was born in Inverness abt 1854 from the Sots Roots Scottish ancestor service. From the infomation they gave me I was able to go on and confirm her parents and Grandmother.
What really helped me was finding out about how the Scotish named their daughters, always including the maiden name of the mother in the name, to keep the clan name going.
You could have a clue in your mother's name Diane Leslie MacLeod....Leslie could be her mother's maiden name, as I believe Leslie to be a common Scottish surname.

Mr Donald Macleod, Minister of the Gaelic Chapel, Cromarty, was admitted assistant and successor to Mr Campbell on the 19th May, 1885. Mr Campbell died at View Bank, Craigie, Perth, on the 5th December, 1888, and Mr Macleod succeeded to the full charge.

I have been in contact with the Tarbat Discovery Centre and they put out lots of feelers but have found no answers for me. The folk were very nice they also contacted India for me, really made a big effort but still no good news.
