On FreeBMD if you click on the page number it should come up with the list of people marrying on that page - which hopefully would include the spouse. (FreeBMD is not 100% complete yet but 1887 probably is as most of the years before 1901 seem to be complete.)

Well, usually on Ancestry transcribed BMDs, when you find a marriage entry, you can click on the page number to view all others that were entered on the same page - but for some reason there are none others showing up. This would suggest that his spouse has been mistranscribed on Ancestry and has been put on either in the wrong quarter or page number.

I have had this happen on my tree with a marriage where the bride and groom ended up entered into different quarters.

Unless you have an idea of what her surname might have been there's no way of finding her - unless someone else can think of a way.

Even if you traced him on the 1891 census with his wife, that would only give you her first name.

Buying a birth cert of any of their children would also give you her maiden name - but if you're going to order a cert you might just as well buy the marriage cert.

There seems to be a problem with that entry on freebmd - no other names are coming up with that page number, which is correct according to the image.

Thanks Athens
I have got a birth certificate for the 2nd son - she is Mary Davies and he James Wood - its just that he is not on the census for any year and she is described as living "by own means" - I want to track back beyond James but at the moment can't find the right record for him - if this is right(the marriage entry) it may be worth getting the certificate?
Thanks again

Thanks Anita - I can't get on ancestry this morning - don't understand why....
It's frustrating having half a record!

Aha - not sure if this helps but I've jus searched the index by taking out the quarter and just leaving the vol, page number, year and district - here's what comes up:

Margaret Dolan 1887 Oct-Nov-Dec Liverpool (1837-1934) Lancashire
William James Doran 1887 Oct-Nov-Dec Liverpool (1837-1934) Lancashire
Agnes Dunn 1887 Oct-Nov-Dec Liverpool (1837-1934) Lancashire
James Wood 1887 Apr-May-Jun Liverpool (1837-1934) Lancashire
William Wood 1887 Oct-Nov-Dec Liverpool (1837-1934) Lancashire

So, it looks like everyone else with that volume and page number for that year and district were married in the Dec qtr. Strange that there is a William Wood noted.

As there are already 2 male 2 females entered on that page, it doesn't help as I was expecting to find an extra female.

I'm not sure what to make of this really ... anyone else any ideas?

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 22 Apr 2008 12:59

checking on FreeBMD that year & qtr is 47% transcribed so seems its still in progress, if you dont want to buy the cert then the next update of Freebmd may get your info

I've tried on FreeBMD putting in just the 1887 Jun Quarter and pulled up a list of all the people marrying that quarter. No Mary Davies though.

I'm going to have a look at any Mary Somethings in case she was marrying under another name ...

♥Athena

♥Athena Report 22 Apr 2008 13:08

I've found something - looking on the actual indexes for 1887 June qtr there is a Mary Davies listed with vol 8b page 193 Liverpool - but she does not come up on a search of the transcribed entries on Ancestry.

I have a sneaky feeling that this might be the missing entry.

Can someone else check to make sure I've got this right please?

Well there's no obvious Mary Somethings with a number even vaguely like 64 so that's not much help.

I'll see if Ancestry can help.

Found the Mary Davies on June Q 1887 - 8b 193. So it's not her. Also double-checked James Wood for the same quarter on Ancestry just in case there were two of him but just that original one - 8b 64.

Wonder whether this is the right James Wood marriage.

Just for general info - if you can't find an entry on freebmd, you won't find it in Ancestry's partial index as they get there info from freebmd and usually not as up to date.

Potty Report 22 Apr 2008 13:30

The entry for Mary Jones same details as James Wood is on the complete index on Ancestry

Seems a lot of people are having problems with Ancestry at the moment but it's working fine for me.

So, the James Wood marriage in 1887 is not the right one.

Is this the family in 1891:
1891 England Census
about James Wood
Name: James Wood
Age: 2
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1889
Relation: Son
Parent's Name: Mary
Gender: Male
Where born: Liverpool

Civil Parish: Liverpool
Ecclesiastical parish: St Martin
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Street address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage:

Education:

Employment status: View image

Registration district: Liverpool
Sub registration district: St Martin
ED, institution, or vessel: 23
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
James Wood 2
Mary Wood 35 - living on own means*
Robert Wood 3

Rather odd for the wife of a carter!

Potty

Potty Report 22 Apr 2008 16:08

If you James was born in October 1889, he would have only been 1 when the census was taken.

Potty

Potty Report 22 Apr 2008 16:20

Another son by 1901 and now Mary is a charwoman. A lot of the neighbours have jobs to do with the docks or ships - maybe James went to sea. Also, there is a very big gap between James junr and the new son:
