Hi

I'm having trouble finding any infomation on my great aunt

Lielly GROUT i'm not 100% on the spelling of Lielly, it may be Lylie, nor do i have her year of birth. I believe she was born in the Edmonton or Hampton area of London

I believe her parents to be William Grout b.1862 and Mary A Hodgkins b.1854, she married Laurence Leeper, unsure of year but he was born in 1895 and they had a daughter Iris born in 1921. She doesn't appear on the 1901 census with her parents so i can only assume that she was born after this date.

Any info would be really appreciated as she is my link in confirming that I have the right family,

many thanks
Debby

Found Iris's birth registration but could not find her parents marriage..
her birth certificate should give you the correct spelling of her mothers name.

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index: 1837-1983 about Iris E Leeper
Name: Iris E Leeper
Year of Registration: 1921
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec

Found this marriage but the groom is missing from the page so can not see if he is Laurence...

England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index: 1837-1983 about Eliza E Grout
Name: Eliza E Grout
Year of Registration: 1921
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Spouse's Surname: Leaper
District: Edmonton
County: Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex
Volume: 3a
Page: 1116

I double checked the Index, page & quarter,
and the grooms name was Lawrence M. LEEPER

Do you think the name Lielly could be a shortened version of another name, it'll be just my luck that she used her middle name :)

Or it could have been a 'nick' name ?

Have added groom to my last posting, looks like it's your great aunts marriage.
If you buy the certificate it should tell you her fathers name

If this is her birth,
she should be on a census record somewhere but I can not find her ...

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index: 1837-1983 about Eliza Elsie Grout
Name: Eliza Elsie Grout
Year of Registration: 1898

Thank you Catherine, yes thats Mary and William in Fenn St but as you see no Lielly, Rose is my G grandmother.

Thank you Julie, think we're on to something here, i'm certainly going to look into Eliza Grout and see where that leads me.

Remember Iris's birth certificate should have her mothers correct name .

Interestingly i know that the daughter, Iris's middle name is also Elsie, I'm beginning to wonder if i do have the right family as she should be on a census, somewhere, unless of course she was in hospital, staying at grandparents or staying with one of her many older brothers and sisters,
(bangs head against the wall)
why didn't have these conversations with her when she was here? :(

The marriage certificate will give her age so you can confirm, or not, her date of birth.
It will also give you her fathers name and profession, and names of witnesses, which could be relations.

Even if she was in hospital or staying with someone else, she should be there somewhere!

yes, i think Iris's birth certificate is the way to go

Just checked my records Laurence's middle name is Matthew, seems to much of a coincidence to me

Catherine

Catherine Report 25 Nov 2008 13:16

What makes you think her name was spelt Lielly?

Deborah

Deborah Report 25 Nov 2008 13:23

It's just the way the family has always spelt it, though I've never seen it written. I've just emailed my uncle in hope that i can jog his memory with the spelling, he also has Iris's old paper work so i'm hoping with another look he'll find something else.

I do remember my aunt when i was a child in the 70's she was alway called aunt Lielly/Lylie. I'm just searching now to see if I can find a death certificate on the info you have all found today, fingers crossed x

Ok, a bit of an udate.

My uncle emailed me this morning, he has found an Eliza on the 1901 census, has failed to mention where he found it, but found her, born in 1898 living at 165 Tiverton Rd Tottenham with her sister Rose 20 mother Harriet 48 and father James 50, also other siblings and boarders but he gave no details of these (bangs head once again against the wall). I've emailed him back to see if he can send me a reference number or something.
I'm stuck for searching till after xmas as husband has found my statement showing how much i spend on credits etc....... whoops :) but have found a James on the 1861 census living in Oldham aged 8, any help would be appreciated, else it'll be on the top of my list for the new year :)

The bad news is that I now have about 100 names on my tree that do not belong to me :( I kind of liked them too, had made them my own if you know what I mean, going to feel guilty deleting them :(

Many thanks all to for your help

Debby
