I stand corrected; I thought Gickie was a nonsense name!

But this (please allow me to delete all the bumph and spaces that so many people seem to want to clutter up threads with ...)

Reta GICKIE (AFN: C5Q3-C9)
Spouse: Ellis Goodfellow RUSSELL (AFN: 3BL9-M5)
Marriage: Aug 1907

-- now that is nonsense, sure. "Reta"? I know the Mormons like to create harems in the censuses, men with 2 or 3 wives, but Reta and ... oh. I'd read that as "Ellen".

Call me Emily Litella. Never mind!

Yeah, I figured, whichever, it's in Oxford, and it's Susan, so it likely isn't anything. Although "Chaundy" - French?

Nah, there are Susan / Susanna / Susannah Chaundys all over Oxford.

Time for jerk chicken fajitas! Oh, rats, that means I have to sent No.1 to the store for sour cream, and he'll be peeved ...

Janey,

My curiosity got the better of me - I looked at FMP image and, just to muddy the water -

Alex Boway (?) looking at the other names on the page - the "B" looks very much like an "E" and the image is very faded but after enhancing it I still can't work out what the name is! Not much help, I know.

Off to breakfast.

Reece

How about a red herring to go with that jerk chicken?

Found this on Curiousfox!

"Also researching the GIKIE or GICKIE family from Kettins - William GICKIE married Agnes HALIBURTON at Kettins in 1702."

And before you ask, Kettins is in Scotland.

Seems like those Gickies got around a bit.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 4 Sep 2009 15:21

Oh, now we're drowning in Gickies.

Reece, re "Boway" -- I'm really certain he is the artist Alexander Rowan.

Unfortunately, there is no biographical info about him on the net that I could find, just a couple of listings of recently auctioned paintings. And I can't find a birth record in the GRO index.

I suspect this is his death, and he was maybe a little older than stated in censuses.

Deaths Jun 1893
Rowan Alexander 58 Camberwell 1d 432

Matches the mother's name in 1871:

ALEXANDER WILLIAM ROWEN
Christening: 02 JUL 1837 Saint Clement Danes, Westminster, London, England
Father: ALEXANDER WILLIAM ROWEN
Mother: MARY ANN
Batch No.: C041601

The 1881 census could be "Roway", someone's contemporary misreading of Rowan.
