Find Ancestors

Hi Derek, I don't know if this query is within the bounds of your impressive Derbyshire knowledge but here goes anyway...........I have somebody who committed suicide in 1925 at The Bungalow, Clodhall Lane, Wadshelf, Old Brampton. Hanging whilst insane to be honest.
Looking on Google Streetview it's an awfully long road with not a lot of habitation and handed down family knowledge suggests that it was because she was so isolated that she sadly lost her mind. Do you have access to any records that might suggest whereabouts The Bungalow might have been please?

Hi Allotment............virtually impossible i would have thought.........from local knowledge.......Clodhall Lane is situated between Old Brampton and Baslow..and passes by Wadshelf (you turn left into Wadshelf from Clodhall Lane) whic in turnis about two miles from Baslow.........it is not easy to know where Main Street Old Brampton becomes Clodall Lane..or where Clodhall lane becomes baslow Road............but one thing is clear..once you get out of Old Brampton the road is virtually uninhabited. supporting your idea of isolation...particularly where the road passes by Wadshelf........the bungalow could have been anywhere, and indeed may still exist under a different name.
This person of whom you speak.......I assume would have been on the 1911 Census........if you give me her name and age...married status etc.......that maybe away of finding her...........at the moment i cannot find Clodhall Lane on the 1911.......

Thanks Derek, I will post some information after this but a friend has kindly driven along the Lane today and has just e-mailed me this..........

The lane started in School lane in Wadshelf and i asked at the beautiful school but the cook who has been there 18 years could not help

We went to the other end of the lane to Curbar and Calver and asked at the pub but no help , an old chap there said it was a cart track back then and bogs both sides why would anyone want to come there to live?

There was only one farm CLODHALL FARM and i went to ask but after having done some research of her own on the district she had never come across a bungalow on Clodhall lane.''................

Why is family history research so absorbing and yet the deeper you get the more annoying it becomes???

Just had a thought if it was still there and on the off chance somebody is reading this who lives there unknowing of any macabre goings on...they will have nightmares.

Hello Derek, we are new to this ancestry research, we would appreciate a little help.
Have found my grand dad's mother Annie Barton who was from Duffield and her father was William Barton and mother Lydia Hulse but am confused to who was his farther and mother as there are several Thomas Barton. Which part of the branch of Barton started the coach company?

Hello Jeanne..welcome to the madhouse!!...if you give me a dare..possibly a date of birth,or marriage, of the earliest Barton you have..I can certainly take it from there.
EDIT..12.30...........If you're local to Notts/Derbys..then you are probably talking of the Chilwell Barton Company..started in 1903 by THOMAS HENRY BARTON...later O.B.E.........but I am told he started in 1899 in Mabletorpe......

we believe that the "char a bang " was started in about 1910 after leaving the Rigga Lane Quarry by Tom Barton, ( Thomas Henry Barton, Thomas Barton's Grand nephew.

Jeanne..I have a problem with Lydia Hulse...........William Barton born 1834/5 Duffield..married aLydia.....also from Duffield..but he appears to have married her in Rotherham South Yorkshire 1858......and it was in Yorkshire that ANNIE BARTON was born in 1864 (Sarah 1859..Walter 1861 Mary 1866)............ok..it may be I have the wrong William and Lydia..but the 1871 Census shows two other children with the name Rogerson............(as son and daughter)........and it was Lydia Rogerson who married William Barton in 1858..............having been previously married to George Rogerson .............seems odd that they both came from Duffield if they turn out to be the wrong couple........

I search further!!! EDIt............have found the family of William Barton 1835 Duffield:-

he was the son of THOMAS BARTON(Duffield) and Ellen (from Wirksworth)..and his siblings were THOMAS 1823. Owen 1837 Emma 184

Who did Annie Barton marry????

THOMAS HENRY BARTON was born Duffield 1866 son of Henry and Mary..and that among other siblings he had a sister ANNIE BARTON born Duffield 1859....is this your Annie???

If you have a few moments to spare could you look in your “archives” for the Jackson and Townshend families am really stuck on this one !!

I am trying to find the marriage of George Jackson, a shoemaker, to Hannah Townshend. By 1841 they were married and living at Hope Street, St Peter with 2 children Elizabeth born 1838 and Georgiania born 1840. The couple went on to have 2 more children that I know of........ William 1843 and Joseph 1846. Another child Emma (1826) was with the family in 1841 but aged 15 so possibly the sister of George !

I have confirmed George’s wife as Hannah Townshend from a copy of their daughter Georgiania’s birth certificate, she was born St Peter in 1840.

I am also trying to find out if the Townshend family were from Derby so any extra info you can find on both families would be very much appreciated............thank you in advance........I know you wont let me down !!!!

Hellos Susan just to let you now that i am onto this...........only just started, but cab tell you that GEORGE JACKSON was Derby born and bred...........haven't found Hannah Townshend yet..but can tell you that by 1861 she was dead..and that George (a shoemaker) was living in Derby St Werbergh with Elizabeth William and Joseph........will get back to you as and when.

Have been digging around family search this evening to try and help you out............. I found a marriage that could be my George and Hannah........St Alkmunds Church, Derby on 19 September 1829.............but not entirely sure these records are accurate so would appreciate you checking for me...........

Now if correct, this has raised another question as record shows George as being a widower !!!! (His birth date varies between 1801 – 1807 and not confirmed as I have no idea of his parents)........A widower at 22 - 28 ? Could you dig a bit deeper and find his first wife, please pretty please.........

Hello again Susan.........can confirm the St. Alkmund's marriage 19.09.1829 between George Jackson and Hannah Townshend or Townshand (sic.)..I could be wrong, butI don'think a marriage entry for 1829 will show George as a widower..he certainly IS a widower by1861............but I have a feeling that our George was a bit of a naughty boy...........It looks like Hannah was 7-10 years younger than him..but his birth is 1801..ish..so that may not be much of an issue.....I think that Emma1826 is their child..pre-marriage, and possibly pre the age of consent.......depending on Hannah's birth date..whic , annoyingly I cannot find...and I think they married after Emma was born.
I think it is very unlikely that Hannh was George's second wife........but of course it IS possible that Emma was George's daughter by an as yet unknown first wife....if this turns out to be truw then George was singularly unfortunate in his choice of wives..twice widowed beofre the age of 50??

EDIT.....HANNAH TOWNSEND baptised St.alkmund's 02.04.1809 daughter of
Thomas and Elizabeth..has got to be a possibilty given the various spellings of the time.........and it could have been the same Hannah Townsend.Townshend.Townshand who married George Jackson at st Alkmund's 19.09.1829.................the only baptism i can find for EMMA JACKSON is 06.01.1823.....St Alkmund's daughter of George and Ann.....

Hi Derek

When you have the time, I would really appreciate a search for the maiden name of the lady who married ABEL HIBBERT/D in Sept qtr 1858.
Reg'n dist Chesterfield...her birthplace Staveley, and first name Kezia, according to all censuses on which I have found them together.

I've scrolled through the complete list of marriages in the District/qtr, and no Kezia is listed, and I can't see it on the IGI.

Don't want to fork out for certs, as the link to me is somewhat distant

Hello Reg............strange one this.......I have the complete story for both these people..except the heritage of Kezia.....Abel was born Edensor son of George and Elizabeth.........and i have the family of Abel and Kezia(h) up to and including 1901.....and they appeared to have lived their whole live at Staveley.........which indicates that they were married there..in the Bride's parish....and that Keziah was born there................yet I cannot find either her baptism, or her marriage.

From the 1861 Census she was 17 in 1861..which is mirrored fairly accurately in all Censuses..even the 1901 agrees on 1843/1844...............which means she was UNDERAGED in 1858 when she married..which may be significant.

The only other clue I can find at the moment is that one of their children baptised Staveley 03.01 1875.was Reginald SKIDMORE Hibberd..which may or may not be a maiden name from either Kezia or indeed from Abel's mother Elizabeth. (Abel was baptised Edensor 1839.

I'm afraid it looks like the Marriage Cert.or nothing......

Skidmore was indeed Abel's MMN,.........she being his father's second wife, the first having also been Elizabeth, which caused a bit of 'fun' until the penny dropped.

OK Reg....I think I cracked it...........there are half a dozen Kezia's registered births in Derbyshire around 1844..........but only one from STAVELEY ...4th Quarter 1843...............now hang on to your hat here for sheer brilliance!!(lol)...we know that ABEL HIBBERD was married JAS1858 Chesterfield..and we know the page is incomplete in that it does not show his wife.....................so..when was Kezia HEWITT married?????????? JAS1858.....CHESHIRE!!!!!!!

Big mistake because the original entry is shown CHESTERFIELD!!!..and of course, the page is incomplete because its entered in the wrong place.......both parties appears on different pages..same place..same date............718 8a...and 718 7b.

I have no doubt at all that this is the marriage you're looking for....KEZIA HEWITT one of several children of John and Elizabeth Hewitt nee Turton who married at Staveley 26.02.1821..........and the marriage was probably not in church becasue Kezia was only 15...............

Hello Gooner..you only want me for my archives!!.....Hayfield is the Civil Registration District in which the marriage took place OND1875.........Hayfield is also a Parish..up to apoint but is generally part of Glossop........

Ellen Woolley 1855 came from Compstall.which is in Cheshire, but also in Derbyshire..depending on which part of Compstall you mean........the actual village appears to be Ludworth..which again could be Marple...etc etc..I'msure you get the messaage..........it all comes down to the fact that the marriage may not have taken place at Hayfield Church, but at anything up to a dozen churches tha were in the hayfield registration District.
I have everything about the family, including George Measham 1848 from Bagthorpe or Stanton..in Leicestershire..a Coachman..who appears in leicestershire..Derbyshire..sussex and Cheshire along with his wife and many children..up to and including 1901.......

So without all the little village parishes in the area,and the Parish Records for each of them.........you'll have to rely on the Marriage certificate OND hayfield 1875..for any further details....
