Hi Derek!

I don't need to be told twice :-D

I am drowning in Bosworths! They all - as usual - live in either Ockbrook or Draycott/Wilne and I am stuck on a Thomas Bosworth.

The line goes:
Edith B b 30 March 1862 Ockbrook m Henry Lane
Thomas B c 12 Jan 1827 Ockbrook m Emma Bateman
John B c 30 June 1804 Ockbrook m Ann Cook
Thomas B c 1777 Wilne m Ann Gretton
Thomas B ? Wilne ? m Mary Samson

I think I have found possible parents for Thomas:
Thomas and Patience (child Thomas B c 10 Jan 1730 Wilne)
Thomas and Mary (Statham) who married in Wilne on 10 Dec 1751 Long Eaton.

But can't narrow it down and I am getting disheartened again :-(

It is really good to have you back and I am so pleased that you are feeling better.

Anne :-)

Hello Anne...have just begun to look at this....aand what looks like a glaring omission on your part is a marraige between THOMAS BOSWORTH and MARY SAMSON (SANSUM?)..at Draycott 23.01.1776............much more likely to be the parents of THOMAS 09.11.1777........26 years after a Thomas and a Mary Statham.were married.............my first reaction is that you might have a Thomas(?) missing....its more than possible.........and this is not proven.......that Thomas 10.01.1730 (son of Thomas and Patience) could be the grandfather of Thomas 1777........Thomas married 1776 could easily have been born 1751/1752 ish..and could well be the son of Thomas 10.01.1730............the gap between 1730 and 1777 is too big for the breeding machines of the pre telly age!!!

let me know what you think.......
EDIT..just found an unconfirmed THOMAS BOSWORH baptised Draycott 1753......Thomas and Mry Statham married Draycott 1751???????

Hi Derek,

Its good to have you back :-)

Oh apologies - I can see that the way I have written it down is confusing but I do have a Thomas Bosworth marrying a Mary Samson (in 1776 at Wilne) whom I thought were the parents of Thomas Bosworth born 1777 (in Wilne).

What I couldn't find was when and where this next Thomas (who married Mary Samson) was born/christened and who his parents were? So let me recap the possibilities (bear with me as its past my bedtime and I am nodding off! :-)) :

Thomas Bosworth born 1777 (Wilne) was the son of Thomas Bosworth and Mary Samson who married in 1776 (Wilne)

then this next Thomas Bosworth c 1752 (Long Eaton?) was the son of Thomas Bosworth and Mary Statham who married on 10 Dec 1751 (Wilne)

then this Thomas Bosworth c 10 Jan 1730 (Wilne) was the son of Thos Bos and Patience.

Is that the right sequence?

Unhappily I have just seen in my notes that there are some other Bosworths that have been confusing me:

Thomas Bosworth c 18 Jan 1723 (Wilne) - parents William Bosworth and Jane.
AND
Thomas Bosworth c 6 Dec 1736 (Spondon) - parents George Bosworth and Elizabeth.

Do you think that these are anything to do with me or are they red herrings?

There are far too many Thomases for my liking. My mother used to get cross about folks always naming each generation the same - in her family they had 'old Tom and young Tom and young Tom's son Tom!'. It drove her nuts! And these Thomas Bosworth's aren't even hers - they are my fathers!

I am losing the plot Derek :-S

Anne x

PS Just seen your EDIT about Thomas Bosworh baptised in Draycott - makes much more sense than the one I found that was born in Long Eaton. My family clearly didn't like to move out of their 50 yard comfort zone! :-D

Derek

Derek Report 17 Aug 2013 15:41

Thomas 1723 Wilne fits ok.........but Thomas of Spondon son of george,,does not.....I have the Spondon and the Ockbrook records...there aare only 13 Spondon Baptisms for Bosworth..and caan see no immediate link........
There are, however 80 Baptisma,35 Weddings, and 47 Burials of bosworths between 1741 and 1901 at Ockbrook!!

I have found a THOMAS BOSWORTH who married SARAH ASHBY at Spondon 10.07.1780.the thing of note is he was from Wilne.............more later

Derek.

Now you can see why I said I was drowning in them! :-D

Derek

Derek Report 17 Aug 2013 22:31

I've sorted it!!..........what I need to know is which Thomas is yours......Thomas 1723 or Thomas 1730........and Mary Statham never existed.....it was JANE STATHAM.......and I would be interested in why you think Patience Bosworth is part of the equation...........because, unless you know better..she ain't......I hope I have your taste buds positively drooling!!.........

Derek Report 18 Aug 2013 17:58

Ok....Let's do the relatively easy bit first:-

JOHN BOSWORTH born 1640....married 1666..father of;-

JOHN BOSWORTH born 1666..married Hannah Harris 18.05.1691 (Both of Derby)..parents of:-

John born 1691 died 1695
Richard 1691
WILLIAM 1693-1736
John born 1695..buried 08.11.1772
THOMAS born 05.11.1698 baptised 27.12.1698
Joseph 1701

next generation..Thomas Bosworth.....who married JANE ST(E)ATHAM 10.12.1751...parents of;

THOMAS 14.01.1752 married Mary Sansom 23.01.1777..parents of

THOMAS 09.11.1777 who married Ann Gretton 09.11.1801....one of whose children was JOHN BOSWORTH 1804 (atWilne)

Right....the difficult bit relates to why i have put both William and brother Thomas in Capitals above..........

THOMAS BOSWORTH 1698..married Patience,,though there is no trace of the marriage..therefore no real indication of the exact date of their alleged son Thomas..allegedly 10.01.1730..who allegedly married Jane Statham 10.12.1751
WILLIAM BOSWORTH1693 married Jane Porter and is confirmed from three different sources as father of
THOMAS BOSWORTH 18.01.1723..and allegedly married jane Statham in 1751........

So in summary, we have two brothers who each had a Thomas.either of whom could be the father of our net definite link in the chain i.e.Thomas 1752....

without further information it is going to be virtually impossible to distinguish between the two.I do know that Thomas and Patience six children.....William and Jane at least two.........

your response is eagerly awaited!!

Derek.

Daniel Report 18 Aug 2013 18:11

Hello there Derek

My great grandparents Robert Cartmell and Elizabeth Cartmell were married in Glossop on the 3rd Nov 1920 and they resided I think across the border in Marple. On the cert it says George is the name of roberts father and Joseph McCarthy is the name of Elizabeth (Lizzie)'s. George is written as being deceased.

I know that Josephs wife was Annie I think Farrel but know nothing of George or any of the Cartmells? I was wonder could they be from Derbyshire and maybe thats why as I hae been looking in Lancashire all the time.

If you can shed any light at all on this for me I would be delighted, thank you for reading.

I can send any certs on that you may need to check :-)
