A family story is that my ancestor Robert Allmand (name varies - Almand, Allman etc) was the mayor of Wrexham, Wales. He was born c1800. Ive looked for him on the list of mayors but that only goes from 1857 and hes not listed. Can anyone help?

Historical Background to the Mayors of WrexhamPrior to 1857, the administration of Wrexham was undertaken largely by the manorial courts of the leading gentry, and the parish Vestry. The manorial courts had become incapable of coping with increasingly complicated local government duties long before 1857 and the Church’s Vestry compensated by adding secular matters to its original church business.

However, problems of administering local government remained with different authorities controlling different matters within Wrexham and public health issues in particular causing problems. Leading townsfolk decided to petition the Privy Council to grant the town a Charter of Incorporation which was granted on the 23 September 1857.

The Charter of Incorporation laid the broad democratic basis upon which modern local government was to develop in Wrexham, and saw the founding of the Borough Council of Wrexham with Wrexham’s first Mayor, Thomas Edgworth.

Today, the Mayors of Wrexham are elected from amongst the members of the Council at its Annual Meeting and serve a term of one year, although in past years some mayors have served in the post for two or more years.

That's because the first Mayor of Wrexham was appointed in 1857

If Robert Allmand was born c1800 then he may have been Mayor after 1857.

Tom - have you found him on any census? However, don't know if Mayor would show as an occupation but his actual occupation might give a clue as to any type of involvement.

I cant find him in the census, the surname varies so much its difficult to trace him. I know he was a publican and a timber merchant aswell. I imagine it was pre-1857.

The census return i havent been able to find! This is very helpful, as i wasnt sure of his second marriage, but the occupation is the same. Although his first marriage was in 1818, so he couldnt hav been born in 1809.......

Tom

Tom Report 27 Jan 2011 16:22

Ive just looked it up and he was born in 1789, which fits!

Flick

Flick Report 27 Jan 2011 16:36

If the FIRST wife died in 1829, he couldn't marry in 1826.

PLEASE....if you really want help....tell us how you got BACK to this man.........

You say the occupation is the 'same'.......the same as what?

You orignally allege that he was a timber merchant and publican...both of which are far-removed from wheelwright

Some serious sorting out seems to be necessary....................

Flick, sorry i gave you the wrong death date, it was 1824, so it does fit. in records he has been down as a Wheelwright and publican. Family say he was a timbermerchant, publican and the mayor of wrexham.
To find him i asked relatives who got me back to William Bennion 1849 - his grandson and i used census returns and BMD certificates to get back to Robert.
I appreciate the help, Tom

LadyKira

LadyKira Report 27 Jan 2011 18:59

So if he died 1824 he cannot have been mayor of wrexham. perhaps it was another family member?
