I can't find this couple on any censuses or in the FreeBMD death records. They married in Christ Church, Greenwich on 28 Sept 1879 when he was 28 and she was 29. Her father was William Smith, his father was Frederick Oswin. Could they have emigrated? |

This is getting complicated! Why were they living apart in 1881??? Or if he was visiting his parents, why isn't he listed as visitor? Hmmm again! |

I have just found a tree on Ancestry that has Jane Maria Challinder's and Frederick John's details and time line. If you want to make contact with the tree owner just PM me your e mail address and i will contact them for you. The owner is a direct descendent of their daughter Frederica. |

Brilliant - many thanks. I found a wrong age on an emigration list too - his grandfather Charles Oswin was put down as 45 when he arrived in America in 1855 but he should have been 54! |

Next question - when did Alithea (Smith) Oswin die? Or have we got a 2nd bigamist in the family??? Frederick's uncle Richard Oswin, my great great grandfather, was a bigamist, and he also travelled the world as he was a steward on steam ships. Hmmm. :-S |

There doesn't seem to be any record of her after the 1881 so maybe she lived with someone and took their surname but didnt marry them |

That would be par for the course - Ann Bongard turns up as Ann Oswin long before the bigamous marriage to Richard! |

There seem to be quite a lot of Alithea Smiths, unfortunately! I'm off out now - will check board when I get back. Thanks everyone! :-) |
