Terence Report 2 Dec 2011 23:18

The records seem to be confusing! The 1881 census shows John Haigh b1847 married (possibly in 1874?) to an Elizabeth b1841, with Eliz b1877, Arthur b1879 and Ben b1881. Living at 67 East St, Lindley Cum Quanrnby.
In the 1891 census John seems to have married Ellen Iredale b1851, in 1875, but shows her as a widow with the same children living at 48 East St, Lindley With Quarmby!
I have the birth certificate for Benjamin showing Ellen Iredale as the mother.
Did he marry Elizabeth and she died early without producing any children? Did the "scribe" write Eliz in the 1881 census instead of Ellen?
Could someone please help with their opinion?

Thankyou, Terence.

If the birthdates are 10 years apart, I can't see it being the same lady

Hi Terence

Are you sure you have the right birth cert. for your Ben / Benjamin ? there are a few born around that time that "could be" his.

Which one have you got ? ( these look like the most possible)

Births Mar 1880

Haigh Benjamin Huddersfield 9a 347

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Dec 1880

HAIGH Benjamin Huddersfield 9a 378

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Jun 1881

Haigh Ben Huddersfield 9a 325
====================================================

For info only
( On the image in Ancestry the age of Eliz. looks like 30 years not 40 ? )

Her name does look like Eliz, on 1881 census ---but Ellen on 1891 and 1901 census. It looks to me as if Eliz. and Ellen are the same person.

1881 census----

Household:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
Jno. HAIGH Head M Male 34 Stainland, York, England Finisher (W)
Eliz. HAIGH Wfe M Female 40 Elland, York, England Finisher Wife (Looks like age 30 on the image)
Eliz. HAIGH Dau U Female 4 Lindley, York, England Scholar
Arthur HAIGH Son U Male 2 Lindley, York, England
Ben HAIGH Son U Male 5 m Lindley, York, England

Hi Barbara, also Mike.
The correct one for Benjamin Haigh is 9a 378, as his birth certificate shows him born 10/10/1880. The mother's maiden name shown is Ellen Iredale.
We have a marriage for an Elizabeth Ann Pogson OND 1874 Huddersfield 9a 601. There is a death for an Elizabeth Haigh OND 1874 (age 24, born 1850). 9a 237. Was she pregnant and died at childbirth (the child as well)? That means he may have married Ellen within, at most, six months!!! We would think unlikley.

The other strange thing is the two census' (1881 & 1891) show the two women at different addresses in the same street!!!
Perhaps it is the same person and she moved her address (in the same street) after John Haigh died?

But we are sure that the right marriage is to Ellen Iredale JFM 1875 Huddersfield 9a 494, with the first child, "Eliz" born in 1877. Perhaps we should get that birth certificate?

Terence.

hi Terence

I would send for John and Ellens marriage cert ---you already have Benjamins birth cert, which you are sure is the correct one for "your Benjamin" which shows Ellen and John as his parents

If you send for Marriage cert. this will / should show if John was married before his marriage to Ellen.

IF he had been married before, then you can think about getting Eliz. (Elizabeth) birth cert to see who her mum was ?

Did Ben get married-and if so have you got his marriage cert ? (for age, occ. name and occ of father (does it say deceased) and wittness' )

Thanks Barbara, will order marriage cert. It may take a couple of weeks as we are in South Australia. We will get back to you then or sooner if anything else is uncovered.

We think we have pinned down John Haigh's death (who seems to have a middle name of William, going back through census' of his parents etc) to two possibles. JFM 1875 Huddersfield. 9a 494. Or JFM 1891 Huddersfield. 9a 250.

Thanks for your thoughs and help Barbara.

You are welcome Terence,

When looking for a birth for John ----Stainland came under the Halifax district

I think the March 1891 death would be the right one---can't be sure though as there are so many John Haighs. (Not sure on William being his 2nd name though ? )

Lets see who his fathers name and occ. is in the Marriage cert and wittness' see if that helps us.

Thanks again Barbara, also "ellieathome". I got the middle name of William from the 1861 census transcription shown as "Haigh, John Wm".
Strangely, he is shown as "Haigh, William" (not John) in the 1851 census transcription. On that census, could John's 1817 father's wife Martha 1818 be the daughter of David 1783 and Hannah1786 Armitage?
As you say Barbara, with so many John Haigh's it is very difficult to get the right one.

Bye for now, Terence.

Terence, the 1861 census I am looking at shows John Haigh, son of Abraham but there is no William mentioned. Living at Westgate, lindley cum Quarmby which is the former name of West Street, very close to the later address of East Street. There is a family of Iredales living next door but one. I have found Ellen Iredale on the 1851 daughter of Benjamin born at Elland which is next door to Stainland.-jl
