Find Ancestors

Hi

I wonder if there is anyone who might be able to give me some advice on Scottish genealogy.

I have the birth certificate for William Welsh Robson b 27/5/1944 Falkirk. Mother Wilhomena Robson Nee Doughty (b19/2/1903) Father William Joseph Robson (b30/7/1891).

I need to find out whether William W had siblings or his parents had siblings.

William died last week and my husband has been asked to try and find family to inform.
Any information/advice very gratefully received.

If it's possible for you to visit Edinburgh, you'll be able to search through all the records and find everyone who is there to be found.

What about putting a message in one of the Scottish papers. The Daily Record is very popular.

After a search on Scotlands People, parents William Robson and Wilhelmina Doughty married in Bo'ness, West Lothian in 1943.

You would need to obtain the 1943 marriage record to determine both sets of parents, but It would suggest that William Welsh Robson was their eldest child .

As Janice said, The GRO in Edinburgh is the best place to look any for siblings.

Your best bet with regard to William W's parents is to buy some credits for Scotlands People website.

Look for Wilhelmina on 1911 census

Find William Joseph's birth - then look for siblings

Unfortunately a trip to Scotland is not possible at present.

The newspaper ad is a possibility but once again we're a bit short on time, the hospital are pushing for a paupers funeral and are being funny with us as we're only friends not family.

I'm also trying to find his paperwork, documents etc., it's all a bit of a ghastly nightmare at the moment.

Just looking for Wilhelmina in 1911 and she isn't showing as yet. Do you know when the parents died?

From the marriage search, she seems to be Wilhelmina Joyce.

There used to be a lady on here who offered lookups but I can't remember her name at the moment.


You can't find an address book or Christmas card list anywhere in the flat can you?

I can't find a birth for Wilhelmina in Scotland, and she isn't showing on the 1911 in Scotland or Ireland - or England either!

Birth of Wilhelmia Joyce Doughty listed on SP as b 1915....West Lothian . This would appear to correspond with Marriage details..

Well that explains why she isn't on the 1911!!

If he was born in Scotland then last one is too late, first one has names other way round so 2nd one is best fit, and close to Wilhelmina's age too.

Wow Janice thank you so much also Eringobragh. The dates I have are on the paperwork already found at Bill's flat so I'm guessing the dob of parents is correct but maybe not.

I can not thank you all enough, I dont feel that the black hole we have unfortunately fallen into is quite so dark now, lol!

Christine - I would do what Janice suggested above and amend your title.

There IS someone on here who has visitied the Endinborough GRO in the past for people but I too cannot remember who it is.

If you amend your title she will be more likely to notice that you need help.

P.S. - in case you are not familiar with procedures in the case of a 'pauper's' funeral - I don't know about in Scotland but certainly in England, I believe that if this were to be the case, the authorities would pay for a 'basic' funeral but they would then board up the property and secure it so that no-one would be able to gain access.

The effects are then sold off and the proceeds reclaimed by them towards the debt incurred.

So, make sure that you have all paperwork and relevant details that you need in order to try to trace the relatives, before this happens.
