Sarah Report 23 Oct 2012 13:19

I am trying to locate whhere the children of Richard Mortimer b 1816 and Mary Ann Cousens (often went by name of Anne) b 1819 dissapear off to.

Richard Mortimer and Mary Ann Cousens married in 1847 in Hampshire and had six children that we are aware of:
Richard Cousens b 1846 Otterbourne, Hampshire
Charles Mortimer b 1849 Otterbourne, Hampshire
Harry Mortimer b 1851 Otterbourne, Hampshire
Emily Mortimer b 1854 Otterbourne, Hampshire
Mary Mortimer b 1857 Otterbourne, Hampshire
Thomas Mortimer b 1860 Otterbourne, Hampshire

The eldest son Richard was born out of wedlock with surname Cousens but he takes on Mortimer surname when parents marry. I have him on 1851 and 1861 census then he disappears.

I have Charles in 1851 and 1861 census but then nothing more.
I have Harry in 1851, 1861 and 1871 then he disappears.
I have Emily in 1861 then she disappears.
I have Mary in 1861 and 1871 then she disappears.
Their youngest child Thomas is the only one I have been able to track and he died in 1861 shortly after being born.

I have their parents on the census up until their deaths - Richard died in 1882. Mary doesn't appear on 1891 census presume she died by then but I haven't found a death for her either.

Any help at locating these children would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I haven't ruled that Harry Mortimer in Hackney out so I will go and have a look in to that one Glitterbaby. EDIT - interestingly, he lists Mothernburg as his birthplace but there is no such place in Hampshire - wonder whether they meant Otterbourne?!?

Yes those are the baptisms for the children - I got them from Hampshire Record Office when I went although I know they are on FamilySearch too.

Thanks for the info on the Richard Cousens in Massachusetts - I suspect it isn't him given the fact he took the name Mortimer after his parents married although it's still a possibility which I will have a look in to.

Be interesting to see who registered the death for the both of them and to check the witnesses on the marriage certificate

Thanks Gins for that - yes that looks like her - dates and birthplace tallies up. That will explain why I couldn't find a death for her! Yes it would be interesting to see who registered the deaths and who witnessed their marriage - might shed some light on the Mortimer children.

I'm stumped for the children?

Just checked overseas and nothing of interest :-(

Sarah Report 23 Oct 2012 16:34

I've been looking in to the Hacknay Harry and I managed to find him on 1891 and 1881 census too living with a Sarah as his wife. I haven't been able to find a marriage for them. The other census don't shed any light on his birthplace - they just state Hampshire. They have two children according to census and looks like Sarah was married before - I think to a William Lowe but haven't been able to find anything else to confirm this is my Harry - dates work out though.

Yes the others are very elusive - I haven't been able to find any deaths for them. I did check at the record office too for burials in the area they lived but nothing jumped out at me.

As for the Richard Cousins, the Massachusetts one got married over there but I cannot view the details as I don't have workdwide subscription on Ancestry and FamilySearch doesn't have it either - wondered what the father's name was.

Post the details for the 'Richard' marriage and I'll take a look

Thanks for that - that rules him out then!

I have no idea where the children went. It seems really strange for them all to disappear yet the parents remain in the area.

Sarah

Sarah Report 23 Oct 2012 16:51

Must have posted that at the same time. The date for the passenger list for Richard Mortimer would work out for him - year of birth is right and would explain why can't find him after 1861 census.

Gee

Gee Report 23 Oct 2012 17:42

I can't understand why all the children would disappear?

I'm starting to think they all went overseas, maybe to a country that we dont have access to online?

Sarah

Sarah Report 23 Oct 2012 17:56

If that Richard Mortimer record you found is him, perhaps he was the first to go and the others followed when they were a bit older? Also possible they went to a country we cannot get information for. Not sure how to move forward with this!

Wow thanks for the marriage - now I can see why I couldn't find it - a different surname variation. The father is Richard so that looks promising that this is my Harry! Yay! One child located now just the others to find!
