This death is in an interesting place,

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
Deaths Mar 1838 (>99%)
Burling Henry Wst Ham 12 218

Even if he had died and mother didn't remarry she could use his name on the birth registration for another mans child.

Christine Report 1 Sep 2013 15:25

Thanks , so do you think that the spelling of Burling as Berling twice is a double spelling mistake, should I record the mother Eliza White as her mother in my tree?

Christine

Christine Report 1 Sep 2013 15:32

Ah the death is isn't it....... he is on the marriage cert as Harry , I know that harry/Henry are same, but does not say deceased as is usual

BatMansDaughter Report 1 Sep 2013 15:34

Hi Christine,

We really need to confirm the birth of Eliza jnr first, I think this is her registration of birth, hopefully it will state her mothers maiden name?

Name: Eliza Burling
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1848
Registration District: Poplar
Inferred County: London
Volume: 2
Page: 323

It was so common that names were spelt slightly differently, and I would think that it started as Burling and then just changed over a period of time due to accents and us mere common folk not being able to read and write back then.

BatMansDaughter Report 1 Sep 2013 15:36

Marriage certificates could easily be fudged and so often the father is listed on there and his death isn't noted...... What's even worse is when they state their father is deceased and he's not!!! The joys of the game.. tee hee. :-D

Christine

Christine Report 1 Sep 2013 15:46

Hi just realised that I have the birth cert(it as a good few years ago, when I got it) and it shows Henry occ a' Lath' something or other(unreadable) but giving impression he is alive like the marriage cert. mother Eliza formerly White.

Christine

Christine Report 1 Sep 2013 15:53

Hmmmm this is getting more interesting, just found a cert that I didn't know I had, a birth cert for my Great Grandfather Frederick James/Lucas, his mother is down as Ann Lucas formerly Taylor, the Ann Taylor that married James Luckhurst......... 1 year before. and the same Frederick that married Eliza Burling/Berling in the name of Gorham. what on earth did James do to be acting so furtive?????

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 1 Sep 2013 15:55

So it ties in nicely then, on the marriage certificate I thought it said Lathe ????? But wasn't sure. If Henry had died prior to her birth then having a name to use for her father would be an advantage, well why be an illegitimate child if you didn't have to be and Henry couldn't argue because he most probably wasn't alive. Just my theory. :-D

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 1 Sep 2013 15:59

James really seems to be dodging about with his surname, I would imagine they would ALL be family names as they are quite unusual... certainly not Smiths or something as popular. More and more parish records are becoming available on line, so fingers crossed it will only be a matter of time before your queries and frustrations are answered.

Just a thought but although Luckhurst and Lucas look very different written down they can sound very similar when you say them.

Mary

Mary Report 2 Sep 2013 10:39

Apparently Luckhurst is a variation of Lucas.

This is a transcription from FMP. I wonder if there's an original copy to see anywhere. The name Pookhurst could possibly be a mistransciption of Luckhurst.
