Find Ancestors

Hi All,

Just trying to tie up some loose ends in my tree, but I'm stuck with Mary Frances Raglan, or Ragland, (known as May). Can't find her birth or her mother's name/marriage.

On the 1901/1911 census she was with her husband James Henderson in Lindale, Lancashire - according to the census born New York, they married in Lancaster in 1888 she was named Raglan.

This is her in 1891, with her mother who married in 1888 to John Middleton under the name Ragland:

So, I've been trying to find her birth, or her mother's first marriage (if there was one), but there is no sign of a Sarah marrying a Raglan(d) on freebmd and I'm not finding anything for Mary on immigration lists so far.

Any help greatfully appreciated!

Although that looks promision Andy, Sarah is rather a lot too old she was only 41 on the 1891 census but, then again 45 is rather old for a child, is there an image with more details please?

OOH that does look promising, on one of the census she stated she was born Brooklyn!!

Yes, I agree. So don't think I'll find a marriage for mother Sarah in UK, as he was born Virginia most likely that's why I haven't found a marriage for her here.

If this is the same person, she's listed as widow of Richard in 1884....

Oh thanks all, this really does look likely. And that looks very likely for Ellen, in the same area as Sarah and Mary F. It's small village communities rather rural, so not many residents born in USA!

Well it's possible Christina, but he must have died before the 1880 census if he's their child, and why no christenings for the 2 children born either side of him?

The only RDs (partly) trancribed at http://www.cumbriabmd.org.uk/ are Millom and Barrow-in-Furness.
Barrow now holds some regos for the old Ulverston RD, but not for Cartmel subdistrict.
Also, http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/ has some Lancs-in-Furness regos transcribed, but none recently enough for your Raglands in Cartmel.

Thanks mgnv, it certainly looks likely Christina's christening is connected (thanks Christina) - and Sarah Newell seems to disappear after the 1861 census (along with brother John). I see her mother Eleanor married, and had Isaac with her in 1871.

Until yesterday, I'd never got anywhere with Mary F's ancestry and didn't know she had a sister - had her from her marriage to burial (in Lindale churchyard), probate etc but apart from the 1891 census had found nothing else. Strange though, none of them are showing up on any passenger lists (well not on ancestry), nothing for Sarah going to US, nor anything for them returning between 1884 and 1888.
