This baptism caught my eye, because I was looking for anything with Mayo and Blanchard in them:

Emily Ann Elizabeth Blanchard
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 27 Jan 1891
Father's Name: George Alfred Mayo Blanchard
Mother's Name: Elizabeth Louisa Amelia Blanchard
Parish or Poor Law Union: Poplar All Saints
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Register Type: Parish Registers

and this looks like the father
Births Sep 1865
Blanchard George Alfred Mayow Poplar 1c 647

So unrelated, probably.

I have found that sometimes people put themselves in the workhouse if yhey were no longer able to work perhaps through illness so that they were not a burden on the family.

Henry's age when he married Jane Bransford equates to 1848 dob

In 1881 he was 33 = 1848 dob

1848 dob in opening post

in 1901 his dob equates to 1856 ... not surprisingly as his 'wife' was much younger and people played with their ages for reasons like that all the time
(edit, and same thing in 1891 as just posted)

in 1911 he was 63 = 1848 dob

possibly in workhouse because of infirmity

If they were all born as Harris's then that Blanchard marriage did not last very long...

Looks like another child. Father is a butcher.

The 3 baptisms where I could not read the address earlier could have been station rd. It definitley ended in ...on and word shape would be right.

Jane Mountfort in 1891 is 10 years younger than she was in 1881. If that is her I would love to know her secret. ;-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 12 Jan 2014 21:38

I think Jane's secret was the same as Henry's.

She was a good deal older than her husband and adjusted her age accordingly. :-)

The Harris children in the household - one is 15 to her 33.

And they are the Harris children in question I think it's agreed .........

as Andrew posted

1881
Henry Harris 33
Jane Harris 43
> Arthur Harris 5
> Frederick Harris 3

1891
Thomas Mountfort 34
Jane Mountfort 33
> Arthur H Harris 15
> Frederick J Harris 13

1901 in Islington
Thomas Mountfort 43
Jane Mountfort 42

Deaths Mar 1909
MOUNTFORT Jane 71 Islington 1b 267

she did a good job of it until she died and it caught up to her :-)
... but didn't manage to trick biology into having more children ...

Thomas Mountfort in 1911 in Islington, aged 53, having left the garment trade to be a lay evangelist

often the only "hospital" that was free was in the local workhouse .........

........... so people were put (or put themselves) in the hospital for treatment of an illness, but often showed on a census as an inmate of the workhouse.

Sorry not able to get back sooner - family business.

Great work. My discovery of Jane Devonald more to luck than anything else. What a twisted thread with this group. Is the Blanchard/Mayo marriage the 1884 Guildford one? Caroline and Henry not marrying because they were already married did not stop Jane from marrying.

Thanks - much appreciated
