I have just found this man - and trying to see if there is a connection to my Henry Strong who I think was in Portsea in 1879 when/where his wife died (Although I have the death cert there is still a little bit of a question over whether it is them). Henry was also born in Crediton .Devon like this Benjamin Strong. I am wondering if he may have been a relative as, as yet I have no idea why my Henry was at Portsea!
If anybody has access to these earlier ones of Benjamin I would be grateful as Library shut now till Thurs afternoon- and I'm working :(

Oooh! thanks. Thats good because there are links with Okehampton too already. May be complete coincidence but thats a great help thanks. Will try and get digging round free bmd to build up the families.

Thank you :-)

Yes! I think thats all him and children because the age of James matches too. Thanks Joonie and Margee

Possibly boot binder & publican in 1881.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Jan 2014 15:21

already in Hampshire in 1841, went home to marry?

Name: Benjamin Strong
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1821
Gender: Male
Where born: Hampshire, England

Civil Parish: St Mary
Hundred: Southampton Town
County/Island: Hampshire
Registration District: Southampton

James Strong 25 school master
Ann Strong 30
Harriet Strong 2
John Strong 70 labourer
Betty Strong 55
Harriet Strong 35
Benjamin Strong 20 printer

they all say born in county, but one never knows, but occupations don't seem a good match

( Ancestry's common mistranscription is 'Shong' but I don't see one of them to match either )

Familyfinder Report 14 Jan 2014 15:23

Potty - the transcription I've got says Boot intur and Publican. I Get the publican bit- have googled the address and it's still a pub! but Boot Intur was odd. Riveter makes sense -but odd combination!

Census Occupations - Boot Binder

Description: Someone who worked in footwear industry working in the shoe industry operating the machines which bound shoes or boots.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Jan 2014 15:26

could the 1881 actually say Book Printer & Publican (or possibly Publisher) for James Strong?

this would be consistent with Benjamin being a printer in 1841 and his father a school master, also his father being James is consistent with his son being James

I think 'Rivitur' is the better reading though although it's all a little odd

Thanks Joonie . Not sure - theres rather too many of them for my liking! Will have to draw out groups and plot them I think else it gets too confusing :)

OOH Joonie i Don't know - I will get to the Library at weekend if poss and have a look myself :) although they were living at a pub in 1881.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 14 Jan 2014 15:29

I still think it's boot binder.

Familyfinder

Familyfinder Report 14 Jan 2014 15:36

Benjamins Father can't be James -he's only 25? or is there an error in the transcription? What relation is John who is 70?I assumed John and harriet were parents of
James Benjamin and Harriet
and little Harriet was a child of Harriet or Ann?
def neef to go to library -thanks for all you've given me though

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Jan 2014 15:36

I agree (that it must be boot binder) -- in 1861 James is in the reformatory school and is a shoe maker

Name: James Strang
[James Strong]
Age: 14
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847
Relation: Inmate
Gender: Male
Where born: Crediton, Devon, England

Civil Parish: Brampford Speke
County/Island: Devon
Registration District: St Thomas

and the luck is that someone has corrected his name

James Strong rather than James Strang
Correction due to an error in transcription.

The more I look at 1841 I'm not convinced its them - will get on igi later too -thanks

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Jan 2014 15:41

fairlyfatfairy, in 1881 Benjamin's son is James (who is in reformatory school in 1861)

if that 1841 census I added is the right Benjamin, his father is James

>>> edit, sorry, that was very stupid of me, James in 1841 is obviously a brother, John is father, yes

that may well not be the right Benjamin (I agree) but it's the only one I've found

in 1871 Benjamin's son James was in the Royal Navy possibly

Name: James Strong
Birth: abt 1845 - Crediton, Devon, England
Residence: 1871 - Off Rock Ferry, Royal Navy, Cheshire, England

noting that in 1881 he was apparently recently married to a younger woman, with only a 3-yr-old child

Oh wow-thanks JoonieCloonie. I see now what you were getting at!

Not surprised he was in reformatory school -its beginning to sound like my family more by the minute!

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Jan 2014 15:55

I edited, I had messed up the relationships in 1841, yes, John seems to be the father in that household, James the school master would be the brother of Benjamin the printer, in Hampshire

Agness Smale was in Okehampton in 1841 but no sign of Ben in the vicinity !
