Find Ancestors

I am trying to get information for my wife about her mother who was taken to a workhouse probably near to Sneinton about 1911. If some kind person could do a look up of workhouse records for Mary Annie Huthwaite around 1911, she would have been there until about 1921. My wife would be very grateful. Info on line tells me that such records can only be accessed personally as they are not digitized and not available on the net. Many thanks. :-)

The work house records might be held by the Nottinghamshire council. If you E mail them they should be able to tell you where they are and how you can get the information you need.

Mother Edith Kate Eliza died in 1914 - (wife of William), but probate was granted to William Mills (bricklayer) - so possibly Mary was admitted a bit later than you thought.

There is an older child on the 1901 census John W (1900), he is in the workhouse school in 1911 - Hartley Road, Nottingham - so maybe ask to get their records checked, she may have gone to same workhouse.

Looks like your mother-in-law had more than 1 sibling, according to the 1911 census image her mother states she has had 4 children, one of which had died - so that leaves one missing.

Actually, it looks like the other child was Sidney Huthwaite, born 1903 - in the same workhouse as John William

Have a look at this thread started by Wendy. You could but ask if she can look up anything re workhouses for you at the Archives.

My great grandad died in the Workhouse Infirmary early 1900's. He lived in the Sneinton area but was admitted to Bagthorpe Workhouse Infirmary quite some distance away. This later became part of the Sherwood Hospital/City Hospital site. I have found his death there as I knew what date I was looking for, but ran out of time last time I was in Nottingham to work back to find his admission.

Wendy here, I know Nottingham archives have records for Nottingham workhouse so will check those for you, I'm not sure about other workhouse but will check when I'm in the archives sometime in the coming week.

I’ve had a look for the workhouse records for Mary Ann Huthwaite but the register’s for admission’s and discharge records for the years 1911-1919 are missing and there are none after 1920 so as we know she was with her mother in 1911 those were the years we needed. Have also look at the Creed records for those years for the workhouse but she wasn't in them but they are more to do with the infirmary side of the workhouse. So have been unable to find anything on her.
The Workhouse School on Hartley Street also known as the Training Institution register’s only go up to 1913. I did find John William aged 9yrs and Sidney Huthwaite aged 7yrs admitted on 23 July 1909 notes says father William was away and mother Edith of 6 Dukes Terrace, Dawson St, notes also says John William 8 Dec 1900 19 Meadows Lane, and Sidney 10 April 1903 Queens Grove, Queens Walk. Maybe dates and places of birth, but not sure about the one for John W as on the bmd site as March Qtr 1900. They were both discharged on the 18 Dec 1911.
John William was again admitted on 23 June 1913 aged 12yrs from home
Did you know that Edith Kate E Tacey and William Huthwaite married in March Qtr 1901.

Edith’s Will:
This is the last Will & Testament of me Edith K E Huthwaite of 4 Welland Terrace, Woodhouse Street in the County of Nottingham. I give & Bequeath to William Mills of 4 Welland Terrace the Policy of Assurance of my life issued by the Royal London Mutual Insurance Society on the 13 February 1911 number 20481951 for the sum of £14.10.0 and that either he shall be at liberty to receive the amount due at my death under such policy of Assurance and that his receipt shall be a sufficient discharge for the same and I appoint the said William Mills of 4 Welland Terrace Excutor of this my Will and Testament.

Also found that Edith was buried in Carlton Hill Cemetery on 27 April 1914 Section B G5 grave 7. Also in same grave was George Tom Tracey buried 2 April 1925 (her bother) and his wife Margaret Tacey buried 6 June 1962.

Hi Wendy,

You have done a magnificent job and have unearthed a great deal of info which my wife is very pleased to have. We have noted the date of Williams birth as being prior to the marriage, and this is confirmed from elsewhere. Those two lads must have had a wretched life don't you think? The finding of the will was wonderful, thank you. We are now in the process of getting the email address of Sidney's grandson in the hope that he may have old photos of interest.

As part of our research we obtained a copy of Edith and William's marriage certificate which we have found valuable. Our next focus will be to try and find out which home Mary (wife's mother) was taken to, there is a possibility that Barnados might play a part in this. We know from first hand that it was not the same place as her brothers.

My wife was very pleased to know that Edith was buried at Carlton Hill Cemetery, she lived close to there as a child but never knew her grandmother was there, neither did her mother. Its good to think that her brother and his wife eventually joined her there.

Glad to have been of help. Mary still could have been in Nottingham Workhouse but as the records for the years we what are missing we will never know. I will keep looking to see if there are any other homes she could have gone too.
Maybe Sidney's grandson will know what happened, you never know.

After much research into my wife's family over the last few weeks, I have discovered (on the subject of where Mary Annie Huthwaite was sent) that as part of the Nottinghamshire Archives, there are records of the Board of Guardians who apparently took a hand in administering the workhouses and workhouse schools in the county.

Within these records there is a Nottinghamshire Admission and Discharge Register for the workhouses and homes in their care covering the years 1856 to 1920. According to their website these are available to view on microfiche.

Wendy: I know you have said you make research visits to the Archives from time to time, is the above info any use in trying to get answers about Mary Annie?

As we know the little girl's father William Huthwaite left the family and seems to have disappeared. He doesn't appear on any census records after his departure. Does anyone have any ideas as to how he might be located, all we know for sure is that he worked in various fairgrounds.

We do appreciate any help we can get, to know more about these people.
