Normally, one would have expected his daughter to record his death in the same way as her mother's.................

Reggie - Thank you. You could be right about the invention or Will could perhaps have been elsewhere.

The IOM Marriage index does show a Will Maddrell as the father of the younger Jane:-

The 2 children born to Hugh Iddon and Jane Manddrell were both born in Dalton in Furness - Isabella Jane in 1868 and Amy Margaret in 1872 - see this site, it records mmm:

http://www.cumbriabmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi

I think if you look at the site they had another child John William in 1874. Dalton is strange, sometimes it comes under Ulverston registration district and sometimes Barrow.

Added, sorry this third child should read William John.

Astra

Astra Report 8 May 2014 16:51

Could this be the Jane. If the marriage to Jane Henry is correct then this child could have been born just before she married and her name changed later.

Astra - Thank you. Given the variation of calculated age between Jane Iddon's 1901 census and 1927 death record I suppose 1932 can't be ruled out. I f have found this marriage.

Name: Jane Gawne
Spouse: William Maddrell
Marriage: 20 Oct 1827 - Malew

But that would make Jane Gawne just 13 or so at the time. Not impossible but seems unlikely?

Astra, PH - Yes Jane Henry seems more than a little plausible. I am grateful to you all - learning a lot about how one needs to think when researching! Reggie - I take your point about no mention of Jane's father in the Bible - hadn't thought of that.

Flip - Thank you for the link to Cumbria BMD - I was unaware of a third child in 1874. The family should be findable in 1871 Census - which I haven't managed to do so far.

Flip

Flip Report 8 May 2014 17:33

I can't find them in dalton, but if the first child was buried in I-o-M then they may have been back there at the time of the 1871 census, returning before Amy was born in 1872.

Flip Report 8 May 2014 17:56

Think this may be Hugh, bearing in mind his occupation in 1901 - I can only find him with mother Margaret in 1851:

Baptism: 30 Oct 1842 All Saints, Hesketh with Becconsall, Lancashire, England
Hugh Iddon - [Child] of John Iddon & Margaret
Abode: Hesketh
Occupation: Mariner
Baptised by: E. Ellwood

Flip - Thank you - that seems to be right. But try as I have been - no sign on IOM in 1871 or elsewhere!

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 May 2014 18:08

Quick PS re Robert McLeod -
yes, Roderick, "seaman Steward" does indicate a MN ship (but not necessarily a passenger ship).
What I meant (when going by the 1861 census record for the wrong Robert!) was that he could have first gone to sea as a fisherman, then later joined the MN.

But as I can't find him in 1861, there's no clue as to what he was doing then.

EDIT: I see you've been researching this for a while!

I think they must already have left for Ireland by the time of the 1871 census.
