Thanks Astra - I looked at that one earlier but put it to one side for time being as name Henson did not fit, not ruled it out as it could be a transcribing error.

greyghost thanks for that - Hope being in Hull in 1911 seems to tie in with the marriage in my opening post.

Ancestry has part of his service records but they are very difficult to read.

It looks like Lawrence might have been born 13th September, 1913.

He had one older sibling born 18.5.12 and a younger one born 8.3.16 but the names are too feint to read.

Above was killed in action and looks like his wife remarried as records have her signature as Hope Atkinson when she received his war medals.

The image is very feint but looks like three children born 8/05/1912, 13/09/ 1913 and 08/03/1916

rootgatherer & Dea - the only confirmation I have that Arthur Edwin Pick and Hope Empson were my Uncle Larry's parents is from his death certificate, his father is shown as being a plumber's labourer and was deceased at the time of Uncle Larry's death in 1949 as was his mother Hope my Uncle Larry was an artificer/engine fitter in the Royal Navy.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 13 May 2014 13:58

Looks pretty conclusive then that you have the correct birth. I suspect that the father registered the first two births and his accent was misheard or misunderstood. Probably Hope registered the third birth herself as Arthur was off giving his life for King and Country and probably never saw his third child.

rootgatherer Report 13 May 2014 14:03

Wonder if the two children named Arthur used their middle names? This is the only possible death I can see for the first Arthur

OneFootInTheGrave Report 13 May 2014 14:39

Thanks rootgatherer, greyghost, and Dea - a lot for me to digest there, and my poor eyesight does not help, so far my reading is that Hope Empson married Arthur Edwin Pick, and they had 3 children ???? - 8/05/1912, Lawrence - 13/09/1913, and Arthur 08/03/1916, and after Arthur was killed in 1916 - Hope then married a Joseph Atkinson in 1920, that said I am a bit confused as to the surnames of Hope & Arthur's 3 children i.e. was it Pick or Empson.

Dea

Dea Report 13 May 2014 14:45

Hope and Arthur's children would have been 'Pick'.

Having said that, as their mother remarried to an Atkinson when they were quite young, they may or may not have then taken the name Atkinson from their new step-father.

greyghost Report 13 May 2014 16:04

The child's surnames are consistently Pick but Henson/Empson here on the birth registration record is showing the mother's maiden name

Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page
Births Jun 1912 (>99%)
Pick Arthur E Henson Sculcoates 9d 301
Births Sep 1913 (>99%)
Pick Lawrance W Henson Sculcoates 9d 355 name

Births Mar 1916 (>99%)
Pick Arthur J Empson Sculcoates 9d 313

On the 2 earlier births it shows Henson which we believe was wrongly heard and recorded or wrongly transcribed.

The later births in the name of Atkinson still show Empson as it should always be the mothers maiden name that is shown. The birth certificate should show mother as Empson formerly Pick
