Hi.
A very puzzling case here.
On here there is a death during ww2 of William Joseph Renew. Renew is a very rare surname and as such almost everyone with it is somehow related to me.

But the only William Jospeh Renew born in England and with the fitting age cannot be this man because he lived until the 1990s( cant remember the exact year) and married and had children.

So either the guy buried in Italy used a false name or was born outside England? Anyone got any futher evidence?

There are two completetely separate 1939 register entries

Anne Gardner was the married name of his sister Born 1920 died 1941(In Norfolk). She married in 1938 I think but had left Bethnal Green for Stratford E15 before the War.
It's interesting how no birth record for the Hertfordshire person seems to exist. That's what confused me - he must have been born under a different name or abroad.

Yes, Fire, it happens frequently - not specifically re military records, but in all areas of family history research.

Usually the answer is that the person was born under another surname, and later the mother has married or remarried.

Unfortunately there were hundreds of William J's born in Sept qr 1922 - we can't even narrow it down by place.

I've compared the surnames of William J's born in Sept qr 1922 with the surnames of women marrying Renews 1922-39 - but nothing jumps out at me.
(That's assuming the birth and possible marriage took place in England or Wales.)

I have checked all the Marriages of Renew from 1922 onwards with the names of their spouses for any possible births but none that seems that likely are found. So puzzling.
I agree with you that a possible solution is a birth marriage or both taking place outside of England and Wales.
Through as he was working in what looks like service at 17 an unusual start to life can't be ruled out.

Yes. Her Marriage is Mar 1938 in Stepney.

But what was her surname

Gardner. Maiden Name Renew.
Her Mother was Anne Renew- Maiden Name Hemsworth. But her marriage in 1918 is under Pitkin as that was the rname of her first husband killed in 1916 in France.
