Find Ancestors

My husbands great great great grandad was John Kirkbright born 1844 in Dalton le Dale, Durham. I have his wife and kids. Last child was born 1877, then the wife (Sarah)is listed as widdowed on the 1881 census...yet theres no death record for him. They had moved to Birmingham about 10 yrs earlier. Someone kindly got John on the 51 & 61 census for me as I couldnt find him (I do have him on the 71), and his parents were Edmund and Dorothy. Yet looking at marriages for Edmund Kirkbright around 1842 there aren't any Dorothy's! John was the eldest child. I'm literally going round in circles. Unless Dorothy and Edmund were a different family?

If Sarah is listed as widow on the 1871 and a child was born 1877 then??? have you that childs birth cert

the 1851 cencus her age looks like 22. so that would make her b1829. not 1819

In which case I'll have to inform my other half the Kirkbright's aren't really his family, lol. At least, not totally. Lord, hadn't expected that.

Thankyou everyone... I had been looking at marriages before John was born (assuming his parents were both his biological parents), and saw one for an Edmund Kirkbright in 1842...put 2 and 2 together.

An Edmund married Ann Craggs in 1841 - according to IGI - but that's a submitted record. But there's a record of a marriage to Ann Crabbs that's one of their filmed ones - 14 May 1842. There's also a marriage of an Edmond Kirkbride to a Mary Stones on 4 Apr 1836 in Shipley, Yorks. ?? There's also a record showing Jane Kirkbright b. 23 Oct 1836 marrying a Matthew Hanson on 4 Aug 1850 at Keighley - but again, this is a submitted record. On BMD marriages it says Ann Craggs. I can order the cert but it'll say father is Edmund Kirkbright, I still wont know which one is mine, Dorothy's, or Ann's. Thanks Jill!

I would assume from the info you give that Edmund married had sons John and Edmund, wife died, Edmund married Dorothy. If you get the marriage cert for Edmund and Dorothy hopefully it will tell you if he was a widower.
