I am looking for my Grandfathers Brother. As the story goes is. When the child was about five my Grandfather was playing peek-a-boo and chasing him and he ran into his mother's apron who had just got a rice pudding out of the oven and she spilt it scalding him and he died. I don't know his name or his DOB, all I have been told was that he was perhaps 3-5yrs old. My Grandfather was born in 1904, there were two other children born after him in 1906 and 1909. My grandfather was definately old enough to blame himself for his brothers death as my mum and all of her brothers and sisters say he never got over it. How do I find him, when I have no name and no d.o.b? THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP AND ADVICE RECEIVED THE OTHER EVENING FROM ALL THE GENES FRIENDS. I HAVE FOUND MY GRANDAD'S SIBLING, CONFIRMED AS ALFRED HADLEY. WENT TO THE BIRMINGHAM ARCHIVES AND READ THE CORONERS REPORT, CONFIRMED DEATH FROM SHOCK OF BURNS FROM FALLING INTO THE RICE PUDDING. THIS HAS SOLVED AND CONFIRMED A FAMILY STORY, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THIS CHILD NOW HAS A NAME. A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO BRENDA FOR THE BRILL INFO SHE GAVE ME.

You may find his baptism and burial on the parish records, I found a few of mine that were born and died between census that way. I have a relative that died aged 5 who died after drinking boiling water froma tea kettle. Waves to Gerri

Yes Surname is Hadley. Fathers Name: David Hadley Mothers Maiden Name: Mary Jane Green He isn't on the 1901 census as he was born after my grandfather who was born in 1904, but there are two other children that are known off born after him. So he was either born in between them or later than 1909 but was about 3-5yrs at time of accident.

Hi Keith. No I dont know his first name or anything about him. Even his age at time of death is only an estimate from what family remember my grandfather saying. It would be great to have a name etc........

I would imagine it would have been in the papers, try the main library local to the event, they may well have copies of the papers on microfilm, and may even do a search for you, if lucky, they may find it and forward a copy of the article. It would help if we could find the years of birth and death though, and a first name for him.

His birth place is probably Birmingham as this is where the other brothers and sisters were born. There are also two children born before my Grandfather who are on the 1901 census. One born in 1898 and the other 1900.

Hi Keith, Thats terrible. poor child. I hate to imagine these things its just horrible. Yes parish records are probably a good option. A relative who incidently I found on Genes, who is my mothers cousin, suggested looking in the papers of that time. She was also told the same story by her father. Would something like this be put in the paper?

Hi Charlotte, post 1911, mothers maiden names were added to the index, makes life a bit easier, although all records are not fully transcribed, so still some trawling of the complete index to do.

Hi Brenda, Yes certainly looks about right. Well my mum thought the child was still a baby, but other family members thought that he was older when he died. That is certainly an interesting find. Thank You Was that of ancestry? How do you get Mothers Maiden Name info come up on results?

I wouldnt have thought it was either of the children who died in 1905, or 1907, because your grandfather would have been too young, really, to blame himself, as he would have been YOUNGER than one of them. Even the one in 1909 is a bit unlikely. But is it possible that more than one child in this family died, thus leading to the confusion about ages? I have family stories where two people have been muddled into one. You could try sending for these from the local RO, stating you only want them if mother's mn is X - local ROs don't normally charge for this. OC

Hi OC, Yes I think I will do that. I think the Alfred in 1913 that Brenda found sounds promising. Although i'm not sure about him only being 1 when he died. It also had GREEN down for the MMN which fits.

Charlotte Just thought I'd say don't give up hope, you will find the poor mite, even if they are illusive. My granddad's cousin had a sister and I was told she had be scalded to death but we knew nothing about her, I looked at every birth that matched the surname and MMN (this was 1920's) from the parents marriage until the other child of the family was 10 (the mother abandoned her husband and surviving child when the kid was 6). I wventually found her after repeated attemts and got the certificates.

Brenda, Yes I'm going to send for that certificate. I'm also going to mention the name Alfred to the family as these things have a habit of triggering memories once you have a name.

Thanks Lunar, Its certainly something I want to solve. My mum never had any contact with her cousins and I have found them on Genes. My mum's cousin said that her father didn't talk much about his family and certainly not my Grandfather (his brother). I think this child dying could be the reason why they didn't stay in touch with eachother. Perhaps it was held against him!
