Yes! Me too! It has to be GR because the email has got my HUSBAND's first name in the title - I'm doing his tree so using MY email address and not his! And yes, same dating site too. What a cheek. Mandy *hurriedly looking through GR's T&Cs and policies to see if they mention selling our private email addresses* *****************UPDATE******************** Take a look at this from the 'Genes Reunited Privacy' section, down at the bottom by the T&Cs: Service Emails. The team at Genes Reunited hate spam and will never ever send you unsolicited emails. But there are some emails that we will need to send you to provide you with a good Genes Reunited service. These include notifications that you have a message from another member, reminders about your membership expiring and guides on how to use the site. A full list of the types of emails you will receive to help you use the service most effectively (which we call Service Emails) are shown below: Welcome email – this email provides all the information you need to get started on Genes Reunited. Payment receipt – this is sent if you upgrade to Full Membership Renewal notices – these remind you to renew your Full Membership Automatic Full Membership renewal alerts – if you have selected automatic renewal of your Full Membership, we will alert before this happens Key service messages – if we need to notify you about changes to the service New message notification and reminders – when you receive messages from other Standard and Full members. Service suspension notices – if you break the house rules As well as these Service Emails, you will also receive New Names and Hot Matches emails, and (if you have opted to receive them) our occasional newsletters. These emails genuinely help you make the most of the website and let you know when there’s new fun and interesting stuff to do.

I haven't had one as yet (Outlook express), but it could be that GR have been hacked into rather than 'sold' e mail addresses. Worrying though, if they can hack into e mail addresses what about other details - c card numbers, etc? Is there anything (beside the message) common to all e mails? i.e. internet provider? Ann Glos

If they can hack into the Pentagon and Microsoft computers they can get in ANYWHERE. Pat

I have not had any - I too am with outlook express. But, I do get a lot of security alerts whenever I first access GR, or open OE whist logged on to GR. (messages to say an attempt to access my computer has been blocked) I don't understand the technicalities of hacking, but does this mean someone can log into GR and then try to access us via clicking on our names and bypassing GR making the contact? I've just emailed GR to complain. Incidentally, it's not confined just to members who post on the boards - this email gave my husband's name and neither of us ever post under that account or name. Will let you know if I get a reply. Mandy :(

Barbra Report 24 Oct 2006 13:50

just sent a complaint to GR If the system has been hacked into they should be doing their best to sort it - especially if everyone complains. if they've sold the addresses (which I doubt) they're in breach of the Data Protection Act. don't suppose I'll ever get an answer to my complaint though Barbara
