Goodnight Linda, sleep well - I wasn't intending to fall off my perch that soon lol.

Allan, Talking of glass things, we have a pair of Victorian Lustres - quite tall ones in ruby coloured glass with gold leaf and delicate floral decoration. There are ten 8inch crystal drops and twelve 5inch drops on each one. Very nice when the prisms reflect the light. They were a wedding present to OHs grandparents in 1900 - from their employers whose estate they worked on as a groom, and housemaid

Good night Linda

Tec, isn't it strange the things we inherit.

My parents received a full set of glassware from my mother's halfsister when they got engaged. I believe that it was purchased from Woolworths.

There was a water set, with jug, sherry glasses, port glasses and cocktail glasses.

It was always in use and of course over the years glasses got broken and we are down to the water jug and two water glasses, two cocktail glasses and one sherry glass but for a set that was in constant use over the last 70 years I don't think we have done so badly.

The Lustres sound fascinating, Tec

Yes Allan, it is strange what we inherit. There are things here of no special value really, but have been in the families for so long that they have just followed us everywhere. Mostly OHs family as one of my siblings made off with anything of interest when my mother died.
I do wonder if things will be kept when we're gone.

That glassware of your mother's has indeed done very well after 70 years, and what is left must have sentimental value to you.

Tec

Allan

Allan Report 16 Jan 2010 23:31

Tec the glassware is one of my few links to my childhood.

Neither of my parents were drinkers but each Christmas they would buy a bottle of Sauterne and drink it from the water glasses.

Then when my Nanna came to stay with us it became a family ritual that each Sunday a glass of port would be taken by the adults in her bedroom (at this stage she was in callipers and could only walk with great difficulty and certainly couldn't manage stairs)

So yes, great sentimental value!

I'm still here, with nothing to say. Tec, isn't it time your were in bed? The weather MUST be improving!!

I have two identical vases with a hand-painted design, which came to me via my parents, and I have no idea of their origin, only that they were on my grandparents' mantle shelf as far back as I can recall. When I asked aunts (all now gone), they could only say the same - that they were 'always' on the mantle shelf. I would like to have them valued - but I have no idea of parting with them. Don't use them either. They are safely on display in my units. They are very beautiful.

Allan, strange how the simplest things are a connection with our past. I love the story of your Nanna and the glass of port on Sundays - things like that we never forget.
I have a small wicker shopping basket here that I was delighted to find when clearing out my grandmothers house. When I was about five years old I clearly remember going shopping to the High St with her. She would tightly clutch my hand on one side, and the wicker basket in the other.
That basket must be 65 yrs old, but holds such fond memories that I could never part with it - silly I know, but it means a lot to me.

Well I must away to bed. so enjoy your day Downunder, and sleep tight Up Top

Goodnight my friends

Hi Berona,
Just spotted you in time - where have you been 'till now?

Your vases sound lovely, and how nice to have been in your family all that time. Maybe eventually they will get passed on to your daughter or someone. We now live in such a throw away society that it's good to have such links with the past.
Sadly, my daughter seems to regard most of our possessions as ""junk" but then she lives in a very minimalist home (looks as if she's moving lol)

Well I really am off to bed........Goodnight

Morning everyone

Hope everyone is keeping cool and warm..:) Although yesterday didn't seem like it reached to the expected 38. Today is forecast for 41 !!

Speaking of family hand me downs...I am a collector of all sorts really...From royal doulton to crystal and I have a few items from Bradford exchange. I only hope that there will be a granddaughter or even daughter in law who will appreciate them. Same with the family tree there isn't any one person that I can give the information too and they will add too it. Ah well I like to delve into history !!

My dad loved making things from wood....There is not a room in my house that has not got something in there that he made. Ranging from blanket boxes to vases.

Your talk of Nannas makes me a tad envious as I grew up without grandparents as I was so young when we came out from the UK. I remember as a child always hearing my friends talk about theirs...:(

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~to everyone !!
Hang on to them Janet. Keep them safe and eventually a grandchild will treasure them..
My daughter throws everything out! My OH was like that too. He believed if you haven't used something for six months - you don't need it! I'm the sentimental type and like to keep things. I'm sure one of my grandchildren will be like me that way. Time will tell. Yours will come along and want to keep treasures just like you do.
What lovely stories - Just been catching up. Seems it was a good thing I didn't try and get on here this morning - probably would have caused a major jam up.
I mowed the lawn before the rain came - and then OH was on the computer.
I should be in tomorrow - the digger man is coming to dig up part of our front lawn (so I didn't mow that hilly bit) and he is going to clear out debris - etc down the back. My grandson would have loved it - but he is away in the South Island.
Hi Janet, Berona and Persey..
Talking about family hand me downs..I still have my dads favorite tea cup that he drank from every morning. I don't use it - I just keep it in my cabinet:-)
I started collecting some Royal Dalton pieces that my MIL bought me for my birthday a few years ago. OH and I also have some bits and pieces from Franklin Mint, we also bought a Monopoly set from them, it has a wooden game board with drawers where the money and game pieces are stored, the game pieces are gold plated. Our children love playing with it!
I also have a set of Austrian Crystal glasses that my SIL bought for OH and I when we married.
My daughter won 1st place in a horse competition, today. I'm thrilled for her, as she didn't think she would do very well:-))
Thinking of Ali Cat, I hope you are starting to eat again:-) Love and (((hugs))) from us all, if you drop in:-))
Your daughter must be really chuffed about the win Carole. Congratulate her for me.
I started collecting Royal Albert china many many years ago, then my OH occasionally bought some for me, and my son has bought a lot for me too. I have enough for it to fill the top of my buffet and hutch. I keep going to use it, but being a creature of habit, I forget, and use the same old everyday stuff all the time!
Editted - opps, Janet, you sneaked in on me!
Alison - hope you are feeling better than before. Don't forget to show your lad how to 'reply' to messages. Just use any old message from any of us - hit 'reply', say what he wants to say and hit 'submit'. Don't worry about the spelling - we'll take care of that and pass the message on to the others. God bless, and stay beautiful!
SueMaid Report 17 Jan 2010 07:03
Well I'm glad I could get on this afternoon. I was ready to throw the computer out of the window so I just turned it off and went to the markets with OH. That was a dead loss too - the fruit and veggie stall had run out of eggs and sweet corn. The two things I wanted.
Oh Carole - that's lovely for you and your daughter. Don't our hearts swell with pride when our little chickens do well:-)) Hope you took photos.
I don't have a lot of family heirlooms. Certainly nothing from the UK as my parents didn't bring anything with them. My mother is a "throw awayer". When she gets bored with something out it goes:-)) I guess she's not a sentimental person. My lot will end up with more than they bargained for and I feel for anyone that has to sort our house out.
Hi Janet..
Thank-you:-))
I love old things too, we have a couple of antique shops around here - I often go browsing in. Like you, I have nowhere to store them all, so just have them all packed away.
I have my FIL's old Jason recliner, it was covered in torn vinyl. My brother is an Upholsterer, so Ive had it re-upholstered in a red/brown suede material - its come up a treat. I have now adopted it as my own!!!
Hi Berona
You should use your Royal Albert, a cuppa tastes so much nicer drinking from them!!
Makes you feel quite posh, too:-))
