I don't know how long I have been a member of GR. I do have a printout with 2002 on it but how long before that, I can't remember. I don't even know how I became a financial member. It used to be free, then suddenly, in 2004, I was charged and paid the fee ever since. I've since found that it is still free but doesn't allow for Community. I only found that just on one year ago and when I first found the Chat board, it frightened me. I used the Trying to Find board and was told off for asking about two people with the same surname so stayed with Gen for quite a while before venturing over to Chat.

I still find that sometimes a thread will be a conversation between two or three people about something only they know, and others are not welcome.

Like you, I'll stay here where I feel more comfortable. if I feel like making a comment on other threads, I make it and run!

I'm going to treat myself to a years subs on Anc'sry, as a Christmas present to myself. Been dithering for ages, so will bite the bullet. spent a fortune on credits here over the years, and I don't know much sending for certs,

Good evening Tec, Berona and Diane, although you are probably still watching x factor.

I disclaim all responsibility for you Tec.

My toes are cold tonight,so I don't think that I will take up your offer of tobogganing Tec

I couldn't live without Ancestry Tec, i upgraded it to worldwide, but that was mostly because I used to spend a lot of time helping out on the other boards.

Tecwyn Report 28 Nov 2009 21:13

Good Evening Linda,

My feet are cold too, and have been for days, but I do have a circulation problem.

When I join Ancestry, what should I go for? I don't think I need worldwide.

And as you were the very first to speak to me here, then I feel that you are responsible, and surprised the others haven't reminded of you of that when I'm being particularly obtuse..............and ridiculous

I subscribed to Ancestry for a quarter. During that time, they contacted me and invited me to transcribe for them. I did Criminal records for a while, but their images bounced around and wouldn't stay still. I was suposed to get a discount on my renewal too, but it never happened. Also, I had no problem reading the handwritten entries, some of which were beautifully written and some were very clearly the same kind of writing I was taught originally at school - however, their 'experts' didn't agree with my interpretation and their system didn't accept my transcribing. When some people on this board pointed out that Ancestry made their profit from my voluntary work, I changed over to FreeBMD. I believe Gail had a similar experience with regard to the discount.

I then took out a subscription to Findmypast. I have found most of what I wanted on there, but haven't used it a lot so I may not renew.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 28 Nov 2009 21:24

Just go for the basic package, but an annual subscription. If you take out the two weeks free trial first, you will gain extra time. You need to give them your card details to do that, but as you are going to join in any case, that doesn't matter.

If you take out the free trial but decide not to continue, you can't cancel on line, you have to phone up.

My subscription is currently on continuous membership, although there is no real incentive to do that. just the opposite in fact. I am going to change it and let it lapse,so that they will come looking for me and hopefully I can get a 20% discount out of them.

Good evening/morning all

Linda, my condolences on your Uncle's passing

I haven't seen the spat on the pantomoime thread yet: I must visit there soon

We have had our own bit of excitement here...a man was murdered in Bunbury yesterday and an Australind family have been charged with the crime. It seems that the victim was an innocent bystander caught up in a family dispute

I have the full Find my past subscription as well. I keep that on continuous membership because they do give a discount for renewal. At first I thought that Find my Past wasn't very useful, but they have added lots more stuff recently,so I do use it.

If I only had to choose one, it would be Ancestry, although the full Find my Past subscription does give me the 1911 census as well.

Good evening Allan, that is sad news.

You should emigrate to somewhere safer!

SueMaid Report 28 Nov 2009 21:31

Hello all - hope everyone is well. Tec you are getting very cheeky. I have never been an exotic dancer in a dubious place anywhere. Well maybe.....no that doesn't count.

Linda - I'm sorry to hear about your Uncle. Is he the last link with your mum? I'm dreading my uncle going - he is 89 and the last of my dad's siblings.

Diane - I do hope you're feeling better. Just over 2 weeks and you'll be able to get plenty of rest. The little one next door had a temperature and a little rash and her mum panicked a little. We just gave her a cool bath and I settled her while her mum made us a cuppa. She's teething and her mum didn't realise what an effect that can have on babies or that ashe is now old enough for a some paracetamol.

I came on here yesterday afternoon our time and found the most nasty and unpleasant person quite deliberately stirring up problems on the board. It was someone under a new name who has caused much trouble in the past. I didn't venture on the threads but made it known later that I had read what was posted and I was disgusted. Why can't people learn to ignore the people who come on here just to cause trouble and the bonus of getting others banned.

I can't stay - we are going to the local markets before it gets too hot. I won't look at books as I have now got 8 books to read and I'm sure will get more over Christmas. Behave everyone and I'll look in later to see if anyone's here.

Sue xx

Tecwyn Report 28 Nov 2009 21:42

Good Morning Allan,

Good Heavens......such goings on......poor man.

We too had some excitement here - there was a drugs bust here at dawn.
Somebody had a little cannibis factory on the go. Whatever next?

Linda, I will go for a years subs. Somebody has given me access to their Ancestry site because we share the same family in part. I get notified whenever they add to their tree, but none of that applies to me now.
Do you think because I have access to that tree I will forfiet the 14 day free trial? If I do go to that site they know who I am, even though I haven't logged on. My e-mail address shows on top of page?

That looks as clear as mud............

Hi all I'm back
Goodafternoon Allan ( I think )
The world must have gone made this past 24hrs, we had a shooting just a 10mins walk from were I live at around 8-30pm yesterday, I was just comeing home and on the fly over bridge over the M62 motorway and saw a police car flying up M62 toward's the area called the Rocket. I heard on today's new's that some-one had fired shot's from a car at another car, at the motorway entrance section. What is the world comeing to.

Diane

LindainHerriotCountry Report 28 Nov 2009 21:55

The free trial shouldn't be affected Tec, you will get that because they hope people can't be bothered to ring up and cancel.

What's the betting Sue does come back with some more books.

My uncle was the last link with that generation on my mums side. I do have two cousins there who are older than me.

On dads side, they are all gone and I am the oldest of my generation. Ooh does that make me the head of the family? How exciting, on the other hand, it shows how old I am,so that is worrying.

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 28 Nov 2009 21:56

Good Morning Sue,

Me cheeky? how can you even think that!

It was kind to help the young couple with the baby - everyone has to learn, a long time ago now, but I remember being frightened to death at the idea of bathing the baby, slippery, wriggly little thing that terrified me.

She still does - but she's much bigger now.......

Welcome back Diane. I don't think I can recall any shootings or stabbings here. Sadly a man's body was found in the river a few months ago,but he seems to have fallen in after an all day drinking session.

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 28 Nov 2009 21:57

Do you really think you should be bathing her now Tec?

or maybe I just read that wrong
