Good morning/evening everyone,

Carole, your baubles are next to the bangles and beads!

Sue, a meeting ? This close to Christmas? ther must be some free food attached :0)),

Berona what a slendid idea of letting the grandkids do your tree.
I must admit that I was out last night at a meeting of my own (sans mac and bins!) and when I drove home OH had put the Chistmas tree lights on plus a string of lights which we have put in the downstairs bay window, and I actually began to feel a bit more festive.

On a more serious note it looks as though the NW of WA is about to experience the first cyclone of the season whilst down in the SW there is an uncontrolled bush fire raging about 50 kms form here.

Fortunately, it's in a remote area well away from any areas of habitation and the next few days are forecast cooler.

Hello, Allan. The bushfires are already a worry. What's even scarier is that almost every town we went through when we were on holiday has had a bushfire. I'm wondering now if we turned the barbie off.

OH is doing a little painting today and then he'll be putting up the lights and tree so hopefully we'll be feeling more festive too. What a miserable lot we are:-))

Not miserable, Sue, just a sign of age!

And the realisation that the season has become over commercialised and lost its true meaning.

Good Morning/Evening Everyone,

I'm late - had a visitor who was a neighbour from where we used to live, she has visited us at this time of year for 15 years. Lovely lady.

Sue - thank you for your lovely card - nice surprise, much appreciated.
You seem to have Christmas under control, and well organised.
I wish we were, but will get there.

Berona, - I hope I didn't influence your decision to drag the tree out, but I'm so pleased to know you're doing it......couldn't bear the thought of you sitting there without even a tree........

Good Morning Allan,

Pleased to hear you are feeling more festive - your OH obviously knew the tree would have the desired effect on you.

But you are right of course, Christmas has become more commercialised as every year passes, and the message buy - buy- buy, comes at you from every angle. So we all get a little tired of it.

Sue, I hope that you see this either now or later:

Many thanks for the ecard.

I have only just been on to my email site and seen the card...delightful

Good evening Tec.

We refuse to spend huge amounts at Christmas.

Our children always received practical and inexpensive presents both for Christmas and their birthdays.

Tecwyn Report 14 Dec 2009 22:33

Allan,
We don't buy expensive presents at Christmas either. There was a tv programme recently about that very subject. I was amazed at how much some people spend at Christmas. Quite ordinary average income families were spending thousands. Many were borrowing money, and taking out hefty loans to pay for Christmas.
Mind bending - well to me anyway.

Tec

Berona

Berona Report 14 Dec 2009 22:46

Tec - I'm just a lazy so-and-so. I won't be 'sitting there' looking at no tree - I will be thinking - "nothing to clean up!". Once it goes up, I can't clean around it, then they all go away and I'm left to take it down and put it away again. Oh well, I won't have much else to do.

I'm so used to having the tree lights showing through the window like other neighbours do. Where I am now, is a complex of villas and townhouses, and some of the people are from a different country and don't celebrate Christmas as we do - while the others either spend a lot of time away from home or they are too busy making money to be interested - miserable lot! There is really nobody to walk past and notice the lights as there was when I lived on a corner in a long street. That's probably why I can't be bothered.

Allan

Allan Report 14 Dec 2009 22:47

Tec, it's not just at Christmas!

There was an article in last Sunday's paper relating to weddings.

Aussies are spending up to $50,000 on their Wedding Day arrangements.

That would be a substantial deposit on a house costing $300,000.

There was, in starl contrast, the story of a couple who managed to get away with spending only $700 on their wedding.

Good on them, at least that couple know the value of money!

Crazy world

well, I will depart the Boards now as I must get the Christmas cards written and a small note for the overseas ones.

As usual I have probably mised the last posting dates. Still they may arrive in time for the Orthodox Christmas!

Have a good evening/morning and try to keep warm/cool (tick whichever applies :0)) )

Regards

Hi Allan. I agree with you on what people spend on Christmas. I suppose the plastic card has something to do with it. They go crazy and buy whatever they want, then after Christmas, the bill comes in and the bank only wants a small amount - yeah! then on goes the interest on the unpaid lot - and by Easter, they don't know how they are ever going to pay it all!
But they no doubt had a happy Christmas!! Priorities??

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 14 Dec 2009 23:08

Berona,....I will come and clear the tree away after Christmas, including the baubles, bangles, and beads.
I like to see the trees decorated, and the lights around the village. I think because December is our darkest month, dusk at 3-30pm - 4pm, the lights are seen more, and more effective. Some people have taken to decorating the outside of their house with all sorts of lights and illuminated figures. Not so much here, but in the towns.

Allan, We had a very modest wedding way back in '62. Simple church ceremony in a small country church. Simple meal for 15 guests in a local hotel, no wedding cars, and a relative took a few photo's.
Everyone enjoyed the day, I can't remember how much it cost, but it wasn't much.

Christmas was also simple when I was small. I was never so happy as when I had a new pencil box for school, a book, and usually some sweets. That was it, and I never dreamt of comparing what I'd had with what other better off boys got. Just happy for anything.
