Is this all there is in half an hour? Where is everybody?

Good evening Tec. I have to thank you for that wholegrain loaf. It was beautiful. Even better toasted!!

Hope you and the duchess are both well and it's good to know your weather is better than it was last week. Ours too, has calmed down a little. Only 23 yesterday and similar expected to-day. Showers forecast and we actually had rain - real rain - yesterday for six minutes! It was wonderful to see but if we didn't look, we missed it!

To-day is our first day of summer. In view of the temps we've had during spring, I'm not exactly looking forward to January - that's usually the hottest month - and bad for fires then too - but we've had those already this year!

I suppose it means that it's the beginning of winter for you. Believe it or not, our temps can get down to 5 in the winter - but that' the "coldest, overnight" temperature. If we have a night like that, the daytime temp can rise up to about 18. I just had a quick look back at August and noticed one day was 4 overnight and rose to 26 later in the day. Do you have as big a contrast as that?

Allan

Allan Report 30 Nov 2009 21:21

Good morning Berona, Good evening Tec,

I have only this minute managed to connect to the Internet and them my computer started downloading a heap of Security updates.

Tec I trust that the Duchess continues in good health?

Berona, we were forecast to have 23 yesterday but at home it reached 29.

The forecast for Saturday, when it is the Mayor's Garden Party, is 30.

That event has already turned into a fiasco! The invitation has arrived and my surname has been changed to Martimer and my Christian name is given as Alan!!

No, we don't get such big contrasts as that - usually the biggest difference between night and day is around 10 degrees - sometimes in high summer it is greater.
We are definitely getting much wetter winters now - don't get the very severe freezing winters that we used to, just milder, and wetter.
There will be many youngers who've never seen a proper snowfall as we used to know them, with 3 and 4 ft icicles hanging off the roofs,
We seemed to get better summers in those days too.

It is due to be minus four here tonight.so all the excess water will freeze. the river is on flood alert, it is worse than I have seen it since thye put the flood defences in a few years ago.

I am very impressed with your kitchen prowess tec, but not with your lack of handyman progress.

I wish that it was the first day of summer here Berona

Good Morning Allan Sir,

I suppose you should consider it lucky that the dodgy typist doing the invitations nearly got it right.

Seriously - how hard can it be to get someones name right?

Good Evening, Linda

At least you can console yourself with the thought that Christmas is so much nicer celebrated in a cool climate....but perhaps I am biased :0))

Tec, what made it worse was that they got OH's full name correct on the invitation but then totally stuffed it up on the name tag!

I must admit Allan , that the thought of Christmas bbq's is all wrong, but to those born out there, I suppose turkey and all the trimmings seems just as wrong

Berona Report 30 Nov 2009 21:33

Good evening Linda, good morning Allan.

Linda, when we get another day of 35, I'll send 15 degrees over to you!

Allan - You'd better check the phone book. There may be two of you!

I used to get invited to the Mayor's annual dinner. Can't say I enjoyed them unless the guest speaker was good. Even though both my OH and I were involved in civic activities, once I became widowed, even though I continued my activities - no more invitations! Funny that. Any one of my sons would have escorted me, but I'm glad I wasn't invited. I wouldn't have gone anyway. Gives us something to think about, though, doesn't it?

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 30 Nov 2009 21:35

North Yorkshire was shown on tv news today, a flooded caravan site, all looks very nasty. We are cut off going South without a huge detour, due to a road bridge being under water.

I was very tired tired today, so my enthusiasm for DIY was zero
maybe tomorrow........OH is very patient thankfully

I will wait for your heat Berona, but even if you could spare a few degrees that would be welcome.

If you don't feel up to it Tec, then just pay someone else to do it!!!!!

It is sad Berona when the invitations drop off once you are no longer a couple. Of course we don't get any anyway!

Berona

Berona Report 30 Nov 2009 21:45

Linda, my mother used to 'slave over a hot stove' on Christmas day, because her mother did it - and her mother did it because HER mother did it, and she did it because she was English.

That's how it used to be here, then people realised it was ridiculous, and they began switching it around - cold lunch, hot evening meal. However, now that so many people have air conditioning and the ability to cook outside the house on barbecues, it is now a matter of choice and mixture. Many people have barbecued food and also cook the turkey, etc. in the kitchen because the kitchen is no longer hot.

In our family; whereven it is held, most of us have a late breakfast, then we all meet at one home, where there are 'nibblies' lying around everywhere, and our "lunch" is served up at about 3pm. There is usually so much variety that we eat more than we would normally eat for lunch - so by the evening, although there are plenty of cold-cuts, salads, sweets, etc., nobody wants to eat any more

Allan

Allan Report 30 Nov 2009 21:46

Linda, every year we say that we will have a traditional Aussie Christmas BBQ plenty of seafood and ham! Perhaps a trip to the beach

Each year we end up with the traditional pommy style Christmas and manfully struggle through a hot meal when the outide temp is hovering in the low 30's. Bl**dy stupid!

Berona, I'm not looking forward to the garden Party....very over rated as is this year's particular Mayor! But I won't let the organisation down by not representing them

Allan,
Sorry, I wasn't being rude, you asked about OH. She is taking things very quietly. Had quitea nasty hypo at 5 am night before last, but I was able to sort it out in time.
Seeing a doctor on 17th December, so I will be watching things very closely........thanks for asking.

3pm is sacrosanct Berona because that is the time the Queens speech is broadcast here.

Awaits thoughts of Aussies on the monarchy

Allan

Allan Report 30 Nov 2009 21:58

Linda, Off with her head! lol

I was a fervent Monarchist when we first arrived in Oz, but now with time and distance I am not bothered one way or the other, particularly with some of the antics that the Royals get up to.

HOWEVER (emphasis, not shouting) if OZ does become a Republic I want the people to elect the President, NOT the polliticians!!
