Berona Report 7 Feb 2010 10:50

See you tomorrow folks. Nothing worth watching on TV, so I'll have a look at my stockpile of unread books and make my way to towards the land of nod. Good night all. (If any Brits are around - enjoy your day). Allan - enjoy your evening!

Perse..That's good that your granddaughters new school has a good dance program:-))
My daughter, besides doing the equine studies, is also doing a music course - which she began last year, which also continues on next year - her final year of high school.

It is great what they will teach at High Schools now.
My high school taught Maori - a friend and myself wanted to take Maori - but in those days they would only allow Maori girls to take it. So I had to do French - what use is that to me here, and probably forgotten the best part of it now.
My best friend from childhood is fluent in French, German, Italian and Japanese and she can manage a smattering of Swedish as well.

Persey.. That's a real shame they didn't let you learn Maori, I cant understand why!!!

My son in year 8 is learning Chinese, he had the option of visiting China this year but didn't want to go.

Carole, in this region that is a far more useful option than say German or French.

Persey, my least favourite TV programme is Gnome and Away

They can learn any language that a school has now, including Maori.
When my husband was at a country school he was one of the few white children at the primary school - his mother was the teacher and drove the school bus - the Maori children were not allowed to talk Maori - not even in the playground. It was later labelled racist - but a lot of Maori kids grew up knowing very little about their own race. I was a victim for lack of a better word of racism - in the reverse sense. Pakeha couldn't learn Maori. Now of course we have Maori kindergartens etc where they can learn their own language.
My eldest when she first went to primary school it was 98% polynesian - one of her photos has her as the only white face - the other white face (a boy) was away that day. When she went to intermediate - she was with a lot of white kids there was also quite a few Polynesians so she joined the Polynesian club - and here was this white girl up on the stage singing and dancing like a true polynesian.

Hi C.C.

Generations of my paternal ancestors were boot/shoemakers, passed down from father to son - so they could rightly be described as a bunch of old cobblers.

Water rates in Wales are still considerably higher than across the English border. The reservoirs in N.Wales supply the cities of Liverpool and Birmingham among others. Therefore all the main machinery, pumping stations, and filtration is operated by Welsh Water - Dwy Cymru. This expense has to be financed by Welsh Water.
Consequently, we who pay our water rates to Welsh Water, pay through the nose for the priviledge of sending our water to English cities.
This does cause resentment.
There was uproar in 1957 when the inhabitants of the Tryweryn Valley near Bala were forcibly removed in order that the whole valley could be flooded to create another reservoir to supply English cities.

The Welsh language is enjoying a resurgence of interest. The area I live in is about 90% Welsh speaking. Schoolchildren are taught Welsh, and in many homes it is their first language. Road signs are all bi-lingual, and all our utility bills etc, are in English and Welsh.
I have mixed feelings about this, as I should think everyone understands English these days, and I do think it's a waste of time and paper to recieve everything official in both languages.
Athough brought up in the South of England, my mother being Welsh speaking, she spoke to us sometimes in English, sometimes Welsh, so I had a good knowledge of the language when I married into a Welsh speaking family, and settled in a Welsh speaking area.

Although I believe all ancient languages should be preserved, I have no time for Welsh language fanatics who try to impose their will on everyone.
It should be optional.
Our County Council will only employ Welsh speaking people, or people with a firm committment to learn Welsh.

Good evening/morning to you all

I suspect that I am the first Antipodean on at the moment.

I seem to have generated a lot of responses on my For Men Only thread!

Officially, according to the rainfall figures, no rain fell yestrday in the Bunbury Region.

Perth falls described on the weather report last night as "very light"
