Good night Linda

And I'm sure that the thoughts of another 40 years with me would be enough to make my OH take the veil LOL

Originally the NZ bach was a very small house where one went for their holidays - but now what people call a bach can be a monstrous great home bigger than my four bedroom house here in the suburbs.

We have a lot of New Zealanders who play leapfrog - that is they are always jumping over the top of one another to have the biggest and the best.
We were looking at some newer sub-divisions yesterday and the houses there look like they are all trying to outdo each other - and whilst a couple looked nice - I would not want my next door neighbour's balcony looking into my place etc. They also try to top each other for the view it just gets too silly.

I am not a prude but prefer my backyard to be relatively private - not have my washing line in full view of everyone around me etc.

Diane

You have just brought back some memories with the mention of Southport.

Many years ago when I was in the Army Reserve we use to do weekend camps at a place called Altcar which was quite close to Southport

Tec - in this country, a 'little house' is one of those which you must have outside if you don't have sewerage!

(sorry, my weird sense of humour is emerging - must be because Allan is back!).

We used to have a long drop at the Bach - Berona. The plumbing did not have sewerage facilities in those days.

Persey, I know what you mean, but unfortunately we are hemmed in where we live, with a massive house just behind us.

Because of the slope of the land the house, which is two storey, looms over us. All the living is done on the second storey which overlooks our back garden. There is a massive balcony and they do a lot of entertaining.

If it becomes too noisy we have a floodlight fitted on the rear of our house which is almost level with the balcony. We just put that on and then go to bed!

Diane

I know where Southport is!!

I is an educated Kiwi, I is.

We had to learn about UK at school along with Australia and Canada etc.
I was amused when I was in the states at the subjects my young cousins were taught. American History, American Problems, American Events, etc they knew nothing of the rest of the world... it was like nothing else existed. And every morning pledging their allegiance to the flag.

Goodnight Linda, sleep well - keep warm.

Allan - My OH has allegedly sp Irish ancestry - I searched for ages and recently found them, with photo's - great stuff.

Berona the little house in old Welsh cottages without modern conveniences was known as the "Ty Bach"

Perse, I was once asked by an American

"What part of England is Wales in" Oh dear

Tec

Diane

Diane Report 10 Jan 2010 22:56

Well I am surprised Perse as it is only a small place and there are people in England who have never heard of it, if you follow the coast line it take you up to Blackpool, now that is a place I would expect you to have heard of because of Blackpool Tower ( Our version of the Eiffel Tower ).

Tec, I have a fair amount of Irish Blood as my maternal grandmother was from Dublin and my paternal great granmother was from Cork.

Another family thing that's difficult to follow up as her maiden name was Coe and she married Charles Coe, possibly cousins, but Charles's family had lived in Northwich since at least the late 1700's

Diane,

Coming from Manchester, Southport was an easy day out in the days before we had a car.

We would go on a day coach trip and often ended up at Southport.

I also have very fond memories of Blackpool. I and some mates would go every Friday night to the dances organised by our Union, NALGO.

That was in the days when petrol was five shillings a gallon!

Tec that is Heresy, just like an American ( no offence if there are any around ) I thought they would at least know Wale's is part of the UK and not England, seen as their own Country is made up of so many states e.g United State's of America.
